"With these national tragedies, we want to give the community an avenue to express grief," said Shara Valentino-Allen, marketing director at Perl Funeral Home. She said Perl has put out a large leather-bound memorial book that people can sign and offer their condolences to the families of the astronauts who died Saturday. The book also will include newspaper clippings and poems, drawings and other materials people submit. It will be sent to NASA officials. She said one person already brought in pictures colored by a Sunday school class. The funeral home has invited area schools and churches to be a part of the memorial project by submitting drawings, poems, letters or other items. The memorial book can be signed at Perl Funeral Home, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. People can drop off items for the book at the funeral home, or Perl representatives will pick up items from churches or schools who request the service. Organizations that would like to have the book brought to a meeting or event can contact the funeral home at 772-5488. Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, 715 W. Main St., also will make a Columbia memorial book available to community members. The Jewish National Fund, an international organization, offers people a chance to buy a tree in a memorial forest in honor of the astronauts, Valentino-Allen said.
