Mail Tribune 100, July 12, 1922 By Alissa Corman Jul 12, 2022 02:38 PM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago July 12, 1922 FRIDAY SMOKER TO OFFER GOOD BOUTS Another of the well-liked Medford Athletic club amateur boxing smoker will be held Friday night at the Medford Athletic club. There will be thirty-two rounds of amateur boxing and manager Bob Brown promises a good how. The thirty-two rounds will be divided into eight bouts. The main event is to be between Jack Martin and Marvin Chastain and promises to be a corker of a fight. The weight of the contestants is announced as 135 pounds ringside. Among other bouts scheduled are Sonny Austin vs. Chauncey Hooker, at 140 pounds; Ben Harrell vs. Noble Everett at 95 pounds; Lloyd Farmer vs. Frank Martin at 90 pounds; Bud Brown vs. Ole Hughes at 83 pounds and Lawrence Power vs. Joe Webster at 55 pounds. Manager Brown promises an orderly well regulated performance with no long tiresome waits between bouts and an excellent card. Ladies are cordially invited to attend. TAKE DERBY ROAD C. LAKE, ADVICE Autoists to Crater Lake are advised to take the Derby road, saving any delay on account of the construction work. Good time can be made on this route. The snow is practically all gone in the vicinity of the lodge, thus eliminating the mosquitoes. The lodge has enjoyed a nice patronage, with a better showing than last year. The snow leaving early has given a 10 days start over last year. The Rim road is being cleared and Superintendent Alex Sparrow has a force of men at work clearing the road. There is no definite date just now how soon it will be open all the way. Mr. Rupert Hauser and family from Portland spent the week at the lodge. Mr. Hauser is a son of Eric V. Hauser who is the president of the Crater Lake National Park Co. Monday, Mr. Anson McCook Beard with a party of five arrive for a few days stay. This party is from New York City. They have also visited Yosemite, Yellowstone and from here go to Rainier. LOCAL AND PERSONAL The Hotel Medford bus is in the garage for a few days and is receiving a new coat of paint. During the time while the bus is being painted a Studebaker touring car is being used by the hotel for the purpose of meeting trains. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
