Lakeview knocks off Phoenix in volleyball finale LAKEVIEW � Phoenix got off to a fast start but couldn�t sustain the momentum and dropped a Skyline Conference volleyball match to Lakeview, 15-10, 15-4 Thursday. The win gave the Honkers a share of the league crown with Henley. The two teams will play a seeding match Tuesday to see which order they enter the state playoffs in. Phoenix, the third-place team, must win a league playoff to make state. The Pirates will the host the winner of a playoff match between the fourth- and fifth-place teams, with the winner going to state. Phoenix bolted out to an 8-2 Game 1 lead as Lakeview committed three net errors. The Honkers, 39-1 overall � counting tournament pool play � battled back to a 9-8 lead, which it didn�t lose. "There were a lot of errors on our part to begin with," said Lakeview coach Barry Shullanberger, "but I also want to give Phoenix a lot of credit. They played very loose and came out fired up and ready to play." In Game 2, Phoenix again got on the board first, but Kristi Albertson served eight straight points to put Lakeview up 8-1 and in control. Albertson was 16-for-16 serving on the night with two aces. Jess Childress had seven kills and Megan Albertson 15 assists and three blocks for the winners. ROGUE RIVER 15-15, HIDDEN VALLEY 2-2 � At Rogue River, Melissa Day served six straight points in the first game and Becky Grinde the final three points of Game 2 as the Chieftains finished fourth in the Skyline Conference. Rogue River hosts fifth-place Mazama in a league playoff Tuesday. Katie Glasscock had nine kills for the Chieftains, Emily Sutherland added five and Kelly Simmons four. MAZAMA 15-12-15, NORTH VALLEY 10-15-9 � At Klamath Falls, Mazama pulled into a fifth-place tie with North Valley, then won the coin flip following the match to make the league playoffs. The Vikings will play at Rogue River on Saturday in the first round of the conference playoffs, while North Valley�s season came to an end. HENLEY 15-15, ILLINOIS VALLEY 3-5 � At Illinois Valley, the Hornets ended the season tied for first place with Lakeview in the Skyline standings at 13-1. Southern Cascade League ST. MARY�S 15-15, LOST RIVER 10-7 � At Lost River, coach James Joy posted his 100th victory in his four seasons with the Crusaders, who completed Southern Cascade League play with a 10-0 record. The second-ranked Crusaders (25-6 overall) won�t play again until a week from Saturday, when they host a seeding match against whichever team emerges from the league playoffs. In the first game, Jenny Gritsch served seven straight points to give St. Mary�s a 13-6 lead. In Game 2, neither team went on long runs, but St. Mary�s prevailed. For the Crusaders, Libby Trum was 8-for-8 serving and had 11 digs and five kills. Kristen Zielony had 12 kills and seven digs, and Lani Brophy had 26 assists. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-15, GILCHRIST 2-3 � At Gilchrist, Cascade Christian used big service runs by Janee Johnson and Kelly Clarke to dispatch Bonanza in 18 minutes and clinch second place in the SCL during the final regular-season match. Cascade Christian (22-5, 7-3 SCL) will host fifth-place Bonanza in the opening round of the league playoffs Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Scenic Middle School in Central Point. Johnson had 11 straight service points, with five aces, in Game 1, while Clarke served the first 13 points, with four aces, in Game 2. Kristin Salamone had a team-high nine kills for the 10th-ranked Challengers.
