Eagle Point rallies to tie Crook County EAGLE POINT - Senior midfielder Eric Matteson set up senior forward Casey Murdock for the equalizer in the 65th minute as Eagle Point rallied for a 1-1 boys soccer tie against Crook County. The Eagles (0-1-1) fell behind in the 30th minute but battled back with a bevy of near misses and Murdock's score. "We should have beat 'em," said Eagle Point coach Coco Ortiz, who is directing 10 seniors this season. "We had a lot of chances to put the ball in the net. ... It was one of those games you can't pinpoint the goal and finish your shots." Murdock's senior forward counterparts Drew Curriston and Jose Sierra also led the Eagles' attack, which generated 14 shots to Crook County's eight. ASHLAND 3, LEBANON 1 - At Lebanon, Scott Beaver scored two goals and Jesse Hodges had a goal and an assist in the Grizzlies' non-conference victory. Beaver scored at the 32nd minute on Hodges' pass and at the 48th minute with an assist from Matt Sharp. Joel Steinfeld's pass to Hodges made it 3-0 at the 65th minute. Lebanon scored two minutes later. Ashland had 29 shots, including 11 on goal, to Lebanon's 13 and five, respectively. WILLAMETTE 4, CRATER 2 - At Central Point, Chris Scott finished an assist from Russ Hill 15 minutes in to give Willamette the lead for good. The Wolverines (1-1) added goals in the 44th, 53rd and 60th minutes to clinch the road victory. Midfielder Juan Zavalas, a Mexican exchange student, scored once and keyed the Willamette attack. In the 46th minute, Comets junior forward Todd Sesock put away a rebound off senior forward Jason Bell's shot for Crater's first goal of the season. Senior midfielder Jason Licato later collected a rebound off junior midfielder Scott Malone's blast and provided Crater (0-1) a second score. PIRATES JAMBOREE - At Talent, the Junction City boys stunned defending state champion Hidden Valley 5-0 and added victories over Phoenix (2-1) and Illinois Valley (4-0) at the Pirates jamboree. Each match went 40 minutes, or half the length of a regulation contest. Phoenix sweeper Al Albright was handed a red card in the match against Junction City and consequently must sit out Tuesday's District 6 opener against Hidden Valley. Girls WILLAMETTE 4, CRATER 1 - At Eugene, Stacey Ermini and Gilian Dilanetto scored two goals apiece to lead Willamette over Crater in the non-league match. Sophomore Sarah LaFontaine connected for the Comets' only goal in the first half. The host Wolverines clung to a 2-1 lead until scoring twice in the game's final two minutes. ASHLAND 3, NORTH SALEM 0 - At Ashland, sisters Kelly and Kim Thompson combined to push Ashland (1-0-1) ahead in the 20th minute, junior forward Kelly crossing to sophomore forward Kim for the goal. Junior midfielder Angela Heine turned in a stellar play in the 30th minute, stealing the ball near midfield then dribbling down the left flank before rocketing an upper-V blast past the North Salem goalkeeper. Sophomore sweeper Brittany Rienhardt, moonlighting at midfield, assisted sophomore midfielder Danya Rose-Merkie, playing forward, for the final tally. CROOK COUNTY 3, EAGLE POINT 1 - At Prineville, Crook County took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute and scored twice more in the first half to earn a home victory. Eagle Point (1-1) evened it at 1-1 with a corner kick that redirected off a Crook County defender in the 14th minute, but the Eagles gave up goals in the 26th and 34th minutes. GRANTS PASS 2, EUREKA, CALIF. 1 - At Grants Pass, Eureka held a 1-0 halftime lead at Mel Ingram Stadium, but Grants Pass rallied in the second half to improve to 2-0. The Cavers got the game-winner at about the 70th minute when Natasha Crook scored on a shot in the lower right corner of the net from about 25 yards. Staci Seetham tied the game for Grants Pass 10 minutes into the second half. Grants Pass led in shots on goal, 13-10. Sophomore Kelly Briggs came off the bench and made an impact at both ends of the field for the Cavers. In a second game at the stadium, Klamath Union girls defeated Fortuna, Calif., 5-2. ROSEBURG 3, MCNARY 2 - At Roseburg, first-team all-Southern Oregon Conference forward Morgan Downie scored two goals for Roseburg in the non-league game at Fir Grove Park. Downie scored at the 14th minute and Erica Hall added a second first-half goal. Marri Coen assisted on both. Downie struck again at the 52nd minute on an assist from Michelle Davis. NORTH VALLEY 2, LA SALLE 2 - At Milwaukie, freshman forward Shae Miller scored on an assist from Malloree Enoch with nine minutes left to forge a tie in a rematch between two teams that met in the second round of the state playoffs last year. Last year, La Salle beat the Knights 3-2 in double overtime en route to the finals. North Valley, with only six juniors and seniors on its roster of 14 players, scored first when Enoch worked a quick free kick into the goal. Two second-half goals put La Salle in front until Miller responded. PIRATES JAMBOREE - At Talent, Phoenix won all three of its matches, defeating St. Mary's 1-0, Junction City 2-0 and Cascade Chrisitian 3-2. Sophomore striker Larrisa Wiltrout scored two goals to pace the Phoenix attack, while Jaclyn Unruh was in goal during the Pirates' two shutouts.
