"STEAM" event coming to Grants Pass Monday Mar 12, 2018 at 6:08 PM Mar 12, 2018 at 6:08 PM An event designed to spark interest in science and engineering-related careers is coming to the Grants Pass airport this week. The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) general public event will kick off at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at the airport, 1441 Brookside Blvd., in the Dutch Bros hangar, according to a news release. The event is open to the public, though attendees should sign up online at http://www.southernoregonstem.org/upcoming-events/stem-kickoff-2018-the-wonder-and-magic-of-flight/, or by calling 541-776-6766, according to SOESD official Debbie Vought. The event is intended to generate interest in science- and math-related jobs, with a focus on aviation and engineering. Attendees will learn about after-school airplane building projects, STEAM-focused summer camps, and how to earn scholarships for pilot training. The event's keynote speaker will be Shaesta Waiz, the youngest woman to fly around the world in a single engine aircraft solo. Waiz, a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, mentors young women interested in pursuing an education in aviation and engineering.
