Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Crater boys, South girls triumph Knutson, Neuenschwander set school records and state-best marks at Crater Classic By DON HUNT Mail Tribune CENTRAL POINT — Two school records. Two state bests. One disco dance. South Medford High’s Kaylyn Knutson and Ryan Neuenschwander were the two biggest stars in a galaxy of track and field athletes — 1,106 to be exact — at the 33rd annual Crater Classic on Saturday. Knutson shattered her own school record in the long jump, sailing to a state-leading mark of 18 feet, 4½ inches. Advertisement Not to be outdone, Neuenschwander upset North Valley’s Jeremiah Lewman and Crater’s Jason James in the 300-meter hurdles, clocking a school-record and state-best time of 39.08 seconds. The previous night, South Medford High hosted a disco dance that had Knutson up until 1 a.m. Saturday. Neuenschwander skipped the festivities, opting instead for a good night’s rest. Knutson appeared to pay for her Night Fever late in Saturday’s meet when she faded badly in the 200-meter dash. But why fret over one small setback when you’ve taken a giant leap into the record book? In the team race, the South Medford girls edged Bend by 1½ points for the title, while the Crater boys triumphed in their own meet for the first time in more than two decades. South Medford, whose boys finished as the runner-up, also won the combined title. "I was a little groggy when I got up this morning," admitted Knutson, "but once I got to the track and warmed up, I felt good. "It’s easy to get pumped up for a meet like this." Knutson flirted with trouble, however, when she scratched her first two attempts in the preliminary round. Down to her final try in qualifying, Knutson nailed her big jump, although the toe of her plant foot came agonizingly close to fouling for a third straight time. "I kept moving my steps back (to get a fair jump) but I kept scratching, anyway," said Knutson. "I knew that third jump was close, but the official said it was OK." South Medford jumps coach Mark Losinski was among those breathing a sigh of relief. "We moved her approach back two feet on her last jump in prelims — we were willing to spot the entire board just so she could get a legal jump," Losinski said. "But she was so pumped up she was running harder and faster than ever down the runway. And that screwed up her steps. "But Kaylyn showed her maturity. She stayed calm and got a legal jump when she had to." Knutson didn’t improve in the finals, but still had jumps of 17-5 and 17-8 that also surpassed her previous best of 17-4¼ . Neuenschwander, meanwhile, beat James for the first time in his career by running a near-flawless 300 hurdles. "Beating James is definitely a confidence-builder," said Neuenschwander, whose time of 39.08 bettered the old school record of 39.24 set by Jason Matthews last year. "I felt like I sprinted through each hurdle and never slowed down." North Valley’s Lewman finished second in 39.49 and James was third in 39.78. James didn’t go home empty-handed, though. He ran a swift 14.8 to edge Neuenschwander (14.9) in the 110 high hurdles and anchored the Comets to victory in the 4 x 400 relay, which clocked 3:28.01. "It’s neat that Neuenschwander and James are in the same conference," said South Medford coach Bill Rowan. "Assuming they both get to the state meet, it will help them tremendously competing against one another all season." Saturday’s other high-profile event was the boys pole vault, and like the hurdles, it didn’t disappoint. Eagle Point’s Robbie Johnston and Siuslaw’s Collin Cram, who entered the meet ranked 1-2 in the state, each cleared 15-6½ . Cram, who achieved a lifetime best by 5½ inches, won on fewer misses. "I think he’s a better vaulter than me but it feels good to get a PR," said Cram, who also won the boys long jump with a mark of 22-0. Johnston, who leads the state with a 16-foot vault, experimented with a bigger pole Saturday and that might have cost him the win. He missed on his first attempts at 15-0 and 15-6½ using the bigger pole while Cram got over on his first tries at those heights. Johnston went to his old pole to clear 15-0 and 15-6½ . "It’s tougher to bend the bigger pole and it takes longer to straighten up," said Johnston. "But if I’m going to keep going higher, it’s the one I’ve got to use. "This was a pretty big meet, but I want to peak at district and state." Other competitors who registered state-quality times and marks included: South Medford’s Tyler King, who sailed to a lifetime best of 44-4 — the third-best mark in the state — to win the boys triple jump. King also took second to Cram in the long jump. Klamath Union’s Kevin Pellegrino, who outfought Summit’s Kenyon Neuman down the backstretch of the boys 1,500 to triumph in 4:03.03. Pellegrino and Neuman, who clocked 4:03.26, clicked heals at the finish line and both tumbled hard to the track. Their times rank 2-3 in the state. Summit’s Nathan Crabtree, who blazed to a time of 22.3 to claim the boys 200. Crabtree’s clocking ranks second state-wide. Marist’s Rob Gillespie, who registered the state’s third-fastest boys 400 time with a 50.13. Bend’s Jacob Knight, who clocked the state’s second-swiftest 800 with a 1:57.58. South Eugene’s Dustin Moore, who ran the boys 3,000 in 8:53.73, the third-best time in Oregon. Rogue River’s Shannon Jantzsch, who failed to improve on her state-leading girls pole vault mark of 11-9, but did go 11-0 to win by nearly two feet. Henley’s Michelle Klaja, who cleared 5-4 in the high jump to tie for second among the state leaders. The Grants Pass 4 x 400 girls relay, which clocked a state-leading time of 4:07.66.
