Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 22, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 22, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 22, 1915 APPLEGATE PICNIC A GREAT SUCCESS; GOVERNOR SPEAKS Governor James Withycombe spent a few hours in Medford Thursday evening, en route to Salem from the fourth annual picnic of the Valley Pride creamery on the Applegate. Over a thousand people from all parts of the Rogue River valley attended the festivities. Between 250 and 300 Medford people attended. The chief executive spoke to the assembled crowd on the value and beauties of country life, and urged his searers to raise more cows and pigs. He made no mention of war and politics, and improved the opportunity by shaking hands with every man, woman and child present. Governor Withycombe was in charge of the republican central committee. Upon his return, and while waiting for the train, he was introduced to Medford business men who stayed at home. The picnic itself was the most successful outdoor event in the history of Jackson County, and despite a somewhat threatening sky and a few light showers, the day was highly enjoyable. The Applegate school carried off the athletic honors in the track meet and was awarded the silver cup given by the Valley Pride creamery. County School superintendent Wells and Professor F.C. Reimer spoke and Miss Bertha Calkins gave a reading. The Medford and Grants Pass bands furnished the music. The day was closed with a bonfire, weenie roast and dance. LAUGHS The servant girl in a suburban family was taken to task for oversleeping herself. "Well, ma'am," she said.
