BOYS BASKETBALL: North Medford romps to Lakeridge title By Mail Tribune staff Dec 19, 2021 08:09 PM A A LAKE OSWEGO — North Medford had two solid showings to start the Lakeridge Invitational but nothing really compared to Sunday’s second-quarter effort that essentially clinched a sixth tournament title under head coach Scott Plankenhorn. The Black Tornado found its groove in the second quarter against McDaniel, outscoring the Mountain Lions 22-7 to pave the way for an eventual 62-45 victory at Lakeridge High School. “In reality the game was won right there in the second quarter,” said Plankenhorn, whose program also went unbeaten in the Lakeridge tourney one year under a round-robin format. “As it was going you could see the momentum we had and it was like, keep churning it out because you never know how many you’re going to need at the end.” Trey Neff scored 22 points and fellow senior Bryce Dyer added 16 points and 15 rebounds to propel the Black Tornado (7-1), which clamped down on McDaniel to force one-and-done efforts on the defensive end in the second quarter and then used that momentum to get out and attack in transition. The Black Tornado turned a 17-10 lead after one quarter into a 35-13 edge before the Mountain Lions snapped a long scoreless drought in the second quarter. O’Shea Miller added eight points and nine rebounds and Ty Neff had five assists for North. McDaniel (4-2) was able to mount a 10-0 run to start the second half before Dyer converted a pair of free throws and then added a steal and a basket to keep the Mountain Lions from building too much momentum. Dyer scored all six of North’s points in the third quarter. “I’m feeling really good,” Plankenhorn said of his team. “I think we played a sound Clackamas team to start and played well and then came out and played really well in the semifinals (against Canby). And today, that second quarter is what you’re looking for as a coach with how well we played defensively and shared the ball. Hopefully we can just continue on this path.” Jaylen Pankey had 10 points and Elijah Martin added nine for McDaniel, formerly known as Madison High. NORTH MEDFORD (62): McLean 3, Klug 0, Ty.
