Mazama jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on for an 11-10 victory over the Panthers at Miles Field Saturday. The loss dropped South to 2-3 on the season. South Medford coach Steve Antich pointed out all of South’s loses have come by one run with the tying run in scoring position each time. After Mazama scored two runs in the seventh to go up 11-7, the Panthers made it interesting. Corey O’Neill opened the bottom of the seventh with a single and Dan Chancler walked. O’Neill scored when Andy Narus reached on an error and Allen Smith’s one-out double scored two more runs to pull the Panthers to within 11-10 But Smith was stranded at second when sophomore Tyler Heil struck out to end the game. "We battled back," said Antich. "But we need to do a better job. We’ve got to get some of those timely hits." South Medford collected 18 hits, but left 14 runners stranded. Four Panther pitchers gave up 13 hits and combined for seven walks and two hit batters. "Our pitchers struggled early," said Antich. "They worked behind the count all day. It’s an uphill battle when you do that." Sophomore catcher Justin Meyer paced the Panthers with a 3-for-4, four-RBI performance. "It was a bright spot that he (Meyer) started hitting today," said Antich. "Hopefully he’ll keep it going heading into the league season." Tim Holtz and Jeremy Frantz each had three hits for South and Narus added two hits. For Mazama, Tyler Conner and Justin Nelson had three hits apiece and Dallas Hubble two hits and three RBIs. ROSEBURG SWEEPS — At Roseburg, not playing a single game thus far this season didn’t slow Roseburg on Saturday as the Indians beat Crescent Valley, 12-5, and North Eugene, 6-5 in nine innings. Kerry Hall provided the heroics in the nightcap against North Eugene, slapping a single with the bases loaded for the game-winner. Hall’s opportunity came after Roseburg’s first two batters singled in the ninth and North Eugene opted to walk Nick Waetcher to load the bases with no outs. Freshman left-hander Blake Keitzman tossed the last four innings to pick up the victory as Roseburg (2-0) rallied from a 5-1 deficit. In the opener, Roseburg managed a 6-0 lead on Crescent Valley before almost letting it slip away as the Raiders cut their deficit to 6-5. The Indians were able to pull away, however, with six runs over the fifth and sixth innings. BROOKINGS-HARBOR 9-15, ILLINOIS VALLEY 7-2 — At Cave Junction, the Marrington brothers, Ray and John, helped carry Brookings-Harbor to a non-conference sweep. Ray Marrington picked up the win in Game 1, and also went 6-for-7 at the plate in the twin bill. In Game 2, John Marrington earned the win and went 4-for-4 at the plate. Ryan Eldred and Mike Bertsch each had two RBIs in the opener for the Cougars (0-3), with Alton Steinhoff going 2-for-4. In Game 2, Anthony Hoskins had two of IV’s six hits.
