Roseburg holds off Crater The Comets, in the thick of the playoff race, twice missed the front end of one-and-one free-throw situations in the last half-minute and dropped a 47-44 decision to the Indians. A win would have moved Crater (13-8, 6-5 SOC) into a tie with Roseburg (8-3 SOC) for third place. The game was played a day earlier than usual because Crater is hosting the district wrestling championships today and Saturday. Chris Pettegrew's 3-point basket with about 30 seconds to play put the Comets in front, 44-43. Roseburg promptly turned the ball over, and Crater's Brian Goode was fouled but missed the free throw. On the rebound, the ball caromed off an Indians player and was awarded to Crater. Andrew Norum took the inbounds pass, was fouled and also missed the free throw. Roseburg got the ball into 6-foot-7 post Joe Newton at the other end, and he scored the last of his 21 points with 11 seconds to play. Goode drove to the basket in the final seconds and threw up a shot under pressure from Newton that missed. After two Roseburg free throws, Norum wound up with a long-distance desperation attempt at the buzzer that also was futile. "Roseburg kept their composure under pressure," said Crater coach Matt Meunier. "When they had to make a big play, they did, and when they had to make their free throws, they did. They stayed cool, calm and collected. They're a mature team." Crater entered the game with designs on improving its defensive play from its previous game, when it lost 68-53 Tuesday at Klamath Union. "This was a real defensive battle," said Meunier, whose team repeatedly came back from minor deficits. "I thought we played the best defense we've played all year. I felt we played defense so poorly on Tuesday, we talked about it and watched video on Wednesday, and the kids came out with a determination to play rock-solid defense. That's what they did." Crater was held to single digits in the first and third quarters. Roseburg didn't score more than 13 points in a period. Norum and Pettegrew each tallied 10 points for the Comets, and Petersen had nine. Crater is in fourth place, but by only a half-game over Klamath Union. The Comets face first-place South Medford and third-place Grants Pass next week. ROSEBURG (47) - Brundige 3, Hall 6, Newton 21, Stembridge 6, Pust 8, Garrelts 2, Krieg 1, Bauman 0.
