PREP ROUNDUP: Eagles soar to 2nd at Classic By Kris Henry Updated: Dec 10, 2022 08:53 PM A A EP’s Lopez, South Medford’s Foss named oustanding wrestlers at North Bend Coast Classic Rogue Valley wrestlers put together quite a showing in the first big tournament of the season, with three local high schools finishing among the top 11 teams and each boasting a champion by the end of the North Bend Coast Classic on Saturday. Eagle Point junior Tygren Lopez capped off a big day by his team by scoring a 6-3 decision over Eric Stansbury of Del Norte in the championship finals at 126 pounds at North Bend High School. “He was able to control the action on his feet and he took the kid down a couple times and that was the game changer,” Eagle Point head coach Kacey McNulty said. “He wasn’t in danger, he just wrestled a smart match with a tough kid from California.” For his efforts, Lopez was named outstanding wrestler for the lighter weights at the Coast Classic. With Lopez leading the way, the Eagles finished runner-up to Crook County in the race for team champion. Eagle Point scored 186.5 points, while Crook County used the depth of having five second-place finishers to total 210 points. “I think we surprised some people,” said McNulty, whose team was fifth after Friday’s opening action and rose to second on Saturday. “It was a lot of good matches for us; the whole team wrestled well this weekend. Obviously we’re not where we want to be but we’re in a great spot at this point in the season.” Also giving the Eagles a boost were a third-place showing from junior Garrett Matthews (285) and fourth-place finishes by Ethan Metcalf (132), Nathan Mallari (138), Kenai Copeland (145) and Gavin Pogue (152). Metcalf, Mallari and Pogue are freshmen. “Our group of freshmen really showed up,” McNulty said. “We have a talented group of freshmen that kind of put us over the top into that range of trophying.” Crater finished third in the team standings with 173 points and advanced the most local wrestlers into the finals, with senior Ty Havniear claiming the crown at 152 pounds while sophomore Elijah Bayne (120) and freshman Kutter Christensen (138) each settled for second place. Havniear scored a tough 6-2 decision over Grants Pass senior Tagge Fry in his championship match, while Bayne was pinned in 1 minute, 33 seconds by Henley’s Dylan Clark and Christensen suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Curtis Bartley of Del Norte in his final. “Ty did a great job of staying focused the whole time,” said Crater head coach Greg Haga. “This is the fifth time with Tagge, Ty’s won three and he’s won two, so it’s always a tough battle. Ty did a good job on his feet not giving up any takedowns and rode him out pretty well.” Joey Hutchins (132) also placed third for the Comets, who lost some scoring chances early on in the tournament and were without three regulars in the starting lineup. South Medford finished 11th overall as a team with 98.5 points behind a championship effort from sophomore Bridger Foss, who scored a 4-1 decision over Crook County sophomore Gavin Sandoval in the 160-pound final. To reach the finals, Foss also defeating returning Class 5A state champion Dylan Lee of Ridgeview in the semifinals, 10-5. For his efforts, Foss was named outstanding wrestler for the upper weights at the Coast Classic. The Panthers also picked up a fourth-place finish by senior Isaack Valdez at 170. “For having a somewhat depleted roster due to continued sickness and some injuries we performed very well and I couldn’t be more proud of this team,” said South Medford head coach James Schumack. Joseph Borraggine was North Medford’s lone placer, finishing fifth at 120. For Ashland, Jack Bauer was fifth at 285. In the North Bend Coast Classic girls wrestling tournament, North Medford secured three individual championships behind winning efforts from Skyler Hall (105), Sadie Hall (125) and Estella Gutches (140). Rocio Perez placed second at 135 and Isabella Prinslow was third at 145 to help the Black Tornado win the team title with 162.5 points over runner-up North Salem (137). Ashland’s Sophia Cellini placed second at 130, Eagle Point’s Elizabeth Roberts finished third at 235 and South Medford’s Mayson Metheny was fourth at 135. Crater’s Sienna Caruso and Eagle Point’s Macinzee Mannino were a double forfeit in the third-place match at 110, with the same situation playing out in the 190-pound third-place match between North Medford’s Lalaine Chan and Katelyn Klingler of Crater. Swimming CRATER SWEPT: At Coos Bay, Crater sophomore Talon Edmonds and senior Mariah Vega scored the lone individual victories for their respective teams under harsh outdoor conditions Friday against Marshfield, which won the boys meet 404-178 and the girls meet 410-150. Vega won the girls 50 freestyle in 34.91 seconds ahead of teammate Elaina McDaniel (35.46) and also won the 100 free in 1:18.14. Edmonds touched first in the boys 100 free in 1:03.50. Also placing second for the Crater girls were Sarah Duron (200 free, 2:56.03) and McDaniel in the 100 breaststroke (1:33.93). The Comets also won the 200 free relay in 2:34.82 behind the efforts of McDaniel, Rhylee Moser, Kiera Gouldhawke and Duron. For the Crater boys, Austin Carlson placed second in the 50 free (29.62) and the 100 backstroke (1:27.50), while the Comets won the 200 free relay in 2:04.26 with Victor Merlos, Edmonds, Samual Severson and Coltrane Wozniak.
