But after this week’s work, the daily bottleneck on North Central Avenue will be greatly relieved as construction workers suspend the major phases of the downtown "streetscape" project until after the holidays, a local planning official said. "You’ll see a huge difference down there," says Eric Iversen, senior planner for the Medford Urban Renewal Agency, which is spearheading the project. "(Traffic flow) will significantly improve after this." The repaving work will drop Central Avenue to one lane from 9 to 11 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. both days, weather permitting. Plans are to pave two blocks of Central Avenue between Fourth and Sixth streets, Iversen said. Also, one-block stretches of North Front, Fifth and Sixth streets will get a layer of asphalt, Iversen added. The asphalt paving is the latest of MURA’s "streetscape" projects. The construction work, which began in June, will then ease to open up access to downtown merchants during the important Christmas shopping season, Iversen said. Advertisement Until then, smaller projects within the work area may cause temporary loss of a lane of traffic, but not daily, he said. Motorists, however, can expect delays today and Wednesday and should seek alternate routes in downtown Medford, Iversen said. However, the work may not get done if weather conditions deteriorate. The paving can begin when temperatures rise to 40 degrees. Iversen said that should allow crews from KOGAP Enterprises to begin work at around 10 a.m. Colder morning weather could delay the work, he said.
