Panthers edge GP in OT By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune South Medford coach Terry Fretz was searching for that "complete" game from his girls soccer team. He may have found it Tuesday after watching the Panthers piece together a hard-fought 2-1 overtime victory against a game Grants Pass squad at Spiegelberg Stadium. Forward Damiann Compher punched home the game-winning goal in the 12th minute of the extra session to give South the Southern Oregon Conference triumph. "We needed to win a game like this," said Fretz, whose team, minus an OT loss to North Medford, has run roughshod over the rest of the SOC. "I thought it was our best performance of the season. "Grants Pass is a very good team. These are the types of games we’ll most likely be seeing in the playoffs." Advertisement Becca Viets also scored for South, while Jan Sumner tallied for Grants Pass in the second half to send the game into overtime. South Medford improved to 9-1 in the SOC to remain one game behind league-leading North Medford. Grants Pass fell to 6-4 and is in sole possession of third place. The Cavers, who dropped a 1-0 decision to South earlier this season, were neck-and-neck with the Panthers for most of the contest, despite a 16-7 disadvantage in shots on goal. "The first 30 minutes of the game it was all us," said GP coach Hector Cruz. "It was 50-50 after that. "It was tough because South has tremendous speed and we were outmatched at times. You could see that when we manned up with them." Viets staked South Medford to a 1-0 lead at the half. The freshman midfielder took a pass from Kendall Gallop and looped a shot attempt from the far right corner. The ball bounded over goalkeeper Christa Krug’s head and crossed into the zone for a score before the Cavers could deflect. Grants Pass scored the equalizer in the 50th minute. Senior forward Courtney Cameron lofted a cross toward the goalie box for Sumner. Panther keeper Bre Reordan came out to snatch up the ball but Sumner beat her to it and headed in the game-tying score into the open right corner of the net. Neither side could manage much offense until Compher found an opening in overtime. Gallop fed Compher in front of the box where she played the ball off her chest, settled herself and whipped a left-footed strike past Krug. "The ball was being deflected and I told Kendall to leave it for me," said Compher of the game-winning goal. "We didn’t come out as strong as we should have. Terry told us to pick it up in OT and we did." Fretz was particularly pleased with his team’s ball control in a game where both defenses were out challenging every pass. "For 100 minutes we did an awful lot of possessing," he said. "This is the best performance for us so far. We’ve been talking about it but today we put it all together.
