The recent North Medford graduate produced an eventual game-winning hit to help the North Medford ASA softball team finish second at the 18A state softball tournament on Sunday. With the second-place finish, North Medford qualified for a berth in the national tournament in Clovis, Calif., on Aug. 2-9. The Southern Oregon Sting took fourth with a 3-2 record. The Black Tornado slipped past the MidValley Sluggers, 4-2, to improve to 4-0 and advance to the championship series with Oregon Reign. Advertisement North dropped a 4-0 decision to the Reign, which is made up of the best players from the northern part of the state, then lost 8-0 to take runner-up honors. Against MidValley, the Tornado jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Jackie Chaplin’s RBI double. But the Sluggers scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to put North in a 2-1 hole heading into its last at-bat. Denay Martin started a two-out rally in the seventh with a hit and Bethany Stousland drew a crucial walk after battling off several pitches. Cordell followed with a two-run triple to left-center field to give North the lead for good. Pitcher Kendra Strahm struck out two of the three batters in the final half of the seventh to secure the win. Class 4A player of the year Alicia Cook handcuffed North in the finale, giving up just a first-inning hit to Deni Rowley. The Sting, the only team to defeat the Oregon Reign in the tournament, came up with a 2-0 victory over the Salem Tremors, but lost a rematch with the Reign, 9-0. Against Salem, Laura Jones scattered five hits and fanned eight in the shutout win. Kristiann Kinsman went 2-for-2 and drove in both Southern Oregon runs, while Allesha Spradling and Jill Artoff both added two hits.
