Phoenix girls take third at Gold Beach Girls prep basketball GOLD BEACH -- The Phoenix Pirates bounced back from a loss earlier Saturday to claim third place in the 15th Annual Gold Beach Rotary Holiday Basketball Tournament. The Pirates fell 59-45 to Gold Beach in the semifinals of the eight-team tournament, and then whipped Bandon, 51-36. Phoenix (2-1) trailed 20-18 before going on a 19-7 binge in the third quarter of the third-place game. "They were hurting us inside, so we had our point guard sag in the middle of our zone," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "We were able to stop their lobs and take away some of their inside scoring." Meanwhile, Jennifer Bones scored 10 of her 21 points in the third quarter, knocking down two 3-pointers in the process, as Phoenix garnered a 37-27 advantage. Lindsey Atchison led Bandon (1-3) with 16 points. Against Gold Beach, the Pirates saw a 20-18 second-quarter lead transform into a 29-20 deficit in the space of 85 seconds just before the half. Trina Rowed topped Gold Beach with 16 points, while Leeann Genovese had 14. Bones led Phoenix with 15 points, while Jessica Prisbrey had 12 points and seven rebounds.
