BUSINESS Erickson reports $13.1 million loss in quarter Comment By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Follow @@GregMTBusiness MailTribune.com By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Follow @@GregMTBusiness Posted May. 5, 2016 at 3:56 PM By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Follow @@GregMTBusiness Posted May. 5, 2016 at 3:56 PM » Social News Erickson reported a 42 percent decline in revenue during the first quarter but managed to narrow its losses for the quarter ending March 31. A dearth of energy and military contracts hit Erickson like a one-two punch as revenue declined to $46.8 million from $66.2 million a year ago. The aviation company, best known for its Sikorsky heavy-lift helicopters, reported a $13.1 million loss in the quarter, markedly better than a $65.2 million setback a year earlier. Manufacturing and repair operations based in Medford saw an $800,000 revenue gain compared to the same period in 2015. "The first quarter was largely consistent with our expectations," CEO Jeff Roberts said during a Thursday conference call. "Revenue for our services continues to be disappointing, as we were unable to replace certain defense, and oil and gas contracts we had last year." Roberts noted Erickson still managed to improve its quarterly cash flow by $7 million despite $19 million less revenue. He said the backlog for work orders is improving. "We delivered some important contract wins, including a Vertrep (helicopter resupply) contract with the U.S. Navy, and a contract in India for the first time in our company's history." The company also sold two Bell 212 helicopters for $2 million. Erickson recently was awarded a contract by an oil and gas operator in Peru to provide aircrane support for a year in the Amazon region. It also will work with Rokstad Power to provide precision placement services to Brucejack Mine in Stewart, British Columbia, over a four-month period, with possible extensions. The company's bread-and-butter commercial aviation services unit saw a $6.3 million decline to $19.9 million in the quarter due to reduced global oil and gas exploration and a drop-off in firefighting activity in Australia, which experienced a milder fire season, Roberts said. "We did, however, see improvements in timber harvesting activity in Canada, as well as higher revenues generated from a European firefighting contract that was not in place during the first quarter of 2015." Manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overall unit revenue grew to $7.8 million for the quarter on the strength of two MH-53E Sea Dragon projects for the U.S. Navy.
