South Medford knocks off Catalina, Ariz. PEORIA, Ariz. - South Medford picked up where it left off the day before and now has a win to show for its baseball excursion to the desert. One day after scoring 10 straight runs to forge a tie with Reynolds, 11-11, the Panthers on Thursday used two big innings to knock off Catalina, Ariz., 13-3. "We got a shot in the arm with that comeback yesterday," said South coach Steve Antich. "We played with a little more emotion today. Hopefully, that will carry over to tomorrow and next Tuesday, when we start SOC games." The Panthers are 1-2-1 on the trip and play their final game today against Centennial High of Peoria. South is 4-3-1 overall. With Clint Rodreick in control on the mound, the Panthers went to work offensively in the second inning, scoring six runs. They would tally the same amount in the sixth inning. In the second, Jeremy Frantz singled, moved up a base on an error and scored on Matt Smith's double. After Dave Henneman was walked and Jon McCollum was hit, Blake St. Onge drilled a two-run double to right field. Corey O'Neill and Ryan Norris ended the scoring with RBI singles. In the sixth, Smith ripped a two-run double and Kevin O'Shea a solo home run to highlight the scoring. The rest was up to Rodreick. The senior right-hander allowed three hits, struck out six and walked two. All three runs were earned. "He did a good job," said Antich. "He worked ahead in the count for the most part. He made the batters put the ball in play, and we played good defense behind him. We didn't have any errors today." In particular, Norris "made a couple of real nice plays at third," said Antich. Smith was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two doubles, St. Onge was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Norris was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. CRATER 13-21, SOUTH ALBANY 3-10 - At Central Point, Crater cracked 32 hits - including a 6-for-8 day by Jared Maddocks - and routed South Albany in the non-conference doubleheader at Anhorn Field. Each game lasted six innings due to the 10-run rule. In the second game, Crater (6-2) actually trailed 10-6 before exploding for 11 runs in the fifth inning. Maddocks opened the inning with a solo home run, and Chris Pettegrew launched a three-run shot to tie it at 10-10. Run-scoring singles by Frank Drake and Derek Petersen led to the next three runs and salted away the win. Maddocks was 4-for-4 with five RBIs, Drake was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Petersen and Colin Schoonover each had two hits and three RBIs. In the first game, another big frame - seven runs in the fourth, highlighted by a David Sills triple - paved the way. Dan Casey was 3-for-3 with a triple for the Comets, Petersen was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Drake 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Sean Teaters (2-0) allowed only one hit in five innings, struck out five and walked one. ASHLAND 4, GLENCOE 3 - At Ashland, Titus Weston ripped a two-run triple in the fifth inning to propel Ashland to the victory on the final day of the Ashland Invitational at North Mountain Park. The Grizzlies (5-3) trailed 2-1 entering the fifth, but Charles Dotterrer drew a walk, and Chase Cook and Bill Rowe rapped consecutive singles to score Dotterrer. Weston then followed with his big blast to give Ashland a 4-2 lead. Chad Hegdahl, a sophomore, pitched the first five innings before being relieved by Ryan Decker. Hegdahl gave up four hits, fanned six, walked one and didn't allow an earned run. Dotterrer and Rowe each had two hits. In other games, Forest Grove downed Hillsboro, 9-5; Putnam defeated Cleveland, 6-3, and Gladstone topped Aloha, but no score was available. ROSEBURG 5, OREGON CITY 4 - At Roseburg, a two-out, two-run single by Grant Goodell in the sixth inning lifted Roseburg to its 10th win in as many outings. The unranked Indians defeated a Pioneer team that earlier had beaten Crater and swept Grants Pass in a doubleheader. With the game tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the sixth, Roseburg's Cory Baird walked and, with two outs, David Powell singled. They advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch, then Goodell delivered his hit. After scoring a run in the seventh, the Pioneers stranded the tying run at second base. Nick Waechter was 3-for-3 in the win.
