The Southern Oregon Electric Vehicle & Hybrid Show, hosted by the Ashland Lions Club, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum, 1500 E. Main St. Participants will see electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as vehicles that have been converted to run on electric or hybrid power. Visitors can mingle with local dealers and sponsors and ask vehicle owners questions about their experiences. Coinciding with the first day of National Drive Electric Week, the event aims to highlight the benefits and availability of electric and hybrid vehicles, while also raising funds for the Ashland Lions Club, an international service organization founded in 1938. Among the exhibitors will be Ashland bicycle shop Piccadilly Cycles. Co-owner Gus Janeway says there has been a rapid rise in interest for electric-assist bicycles among his customers. “One of the most exciting things we see in our shop is the number of people who come in to consult with us on reinventing their approach to transportation,” says Janeway. Piccadilly Cycles is supplying the $2,400 raffle prize: a bright red Currie Technologies IZIP E3 Zuma electric bicycle. New this year will be the FarmDogg ATV, a robotic farm utility vehicle which was displayed during President Obama's first White House Demo Day Aug. 4. It was developed by Melissa Brandao, CEO of Rogue Rovers. The electric vehicle uses a Cloud-based rover operating platform, which enables farmers to manage the machine and its data collection capabilities remotely. While other electric utility vehicles from competitors such as Polaris and John Deere are modifications of gas-powered vehicles, the Rogue Valley-engineered and assembled FarmDogg caters to consumers who require more utility and function, Brandao says. “The FarmDogg is designed to integrate with other systems — like attachments, data collection and robotics, so it's a platform more than just being a vehicle,” says Brandao. The event also will showcase two new model S Tesla sedans, says former Lions Club president and this year’s event chairman, Pete Jorgensen. Tesla is a California-based technology company that designs and manufactures electric cars. Since the company’s birth in 2003, it's put 50,000 Tesla vehicles on the road and 500 charging stations to keep them moving. Tesla’s success mirrors the rising popularity of electric vehicles worldwide. Electric car sales have doubled every year for the past three years, according to academics at the Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg. For those Rogue Valley residents who have already hopped aboard the electric-powered bandwagon, the Lions Club encourages owners of electric or hybrid vehicles to display them at the event. Entry is free, but a donation of a nonperishable food item for the Ashland Emergency Food Bank is requested. Ashland resident Angelica Crimmins is a freelance writer.
