Hidden Valley too much for Phoenix PHOENIX � The fourth-quarter jinx that has plagued Phoenix reared its head again Friday in a 70-63 boys basketball loss to Hidden Valley. The Pirates led the Skyline Conference contest by nine points, 54-45, after three solid quarters of play, only to succumb to the pressing Mustangs and their improved shooting. "The games are too long," lamented Phoenix coach Tom Murphy. Phoenix (8-10, 3-7 Skyline) did a good job of handling Hidden Valley�s press in the first half, finding Travis Brink behind the defense and turning him loose. Brink scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half, and the Pirates tallied 19, 16 and 19 points in the first three periods. "They did a very good job of making that correction," said Murphy. Kevin Ries scored 28 points for Hidden Valley, including 10 in the fourth quarter. He made five 3-pointers. The Cougars (15-5, 7-3 Skyline) fell into a second-place tie with Hidden Valley, one game behind conference-leading Henley. Illinois Valley trailed Mazama 46-45 with about three minutes remaining, but the Vikings outscored the Cougars 5-1 to end the game. Mazama�s B.J. Marr and Levell Hesia combined for 30 points.
