Sheldon's Neuman slams North in SWC sweep By Mail Tribune staff May 03, 2019 09:38 PM A A Sheldon senior catcher Emma Neuman had quite the offensive performance in a Southwest Conference softball doubleheader sweep against host North Medford Friday. Neuman had six hits in the twinbill and homered in each game as the second-ranked Irish defeated the Black Tornado 9-6 and 17-5 in five innings. In Game 1, SWC first-place Sheldon (17-3, 9-1 SWC) built a 7-0 lead before North could get going offensively. The Black Tornado (11-9, 4-6) used three singles and a walk to score three runs in the fourth inning to cut Sheldon’s lead to 7-3. In the fifth, Lauren Barry and Chelby Smalley singled and scored on sacrifice bunts by Allie Hertager and Makenna Austin to pull North to within two runs, 7-5. But Neuman answered with a two-run homer — her third hit and fourth run scored in the game — in the sixth to pad Sheldon’s lead. Barry went 4-for-4 to pace the Black Tornado 12-hit attack, and teammate Kylie Baker collected two hits. In the second game, Neuman blasted a grand slam in the Irish’s seven-run second inning. She compiled three hits, five RBIs and four runs scored in the contest. For North Medford, Kyleigh Lopez rapped two hits and Barry hit an RBI triple and scored a run. HR — S: Neuman. GRANTS PASS 3-23, ROSEBURG O-4: At Grants Pass, Grants Pass leapfrogged Roseburg into second place in the Southwest Conference with the home doubleheader sweep. In the opener, third-ranked Grants Pass (19-3, 9-3 SWC) received a pitching gem from Skylar Padgett. Then the Cavers bludgeoned ninth-ranked Roseburg (13-9, 8-4) in the five-inning nightcap. Padgett tossed a three-hit shutout and Grants Pass scored all three runs in the second inning of Game 1. Devin Ireland opened the winning rally with a single and Maddie Naylor walked with one out. Chloe Dominger connected for a two-run single and Kylie Rucker delivered an RBI single — both with two outs to account for the runs. Ireland went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs to spark Grants Pass’ 20-hit attack in the second game. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 20-12, DOUGLAS 8-4: At Winston, Cascade Christian’s offense went off for 35 hits on the day, including eight by Mallory Meilicke and six by Katelyn Willard in a Far West League sweep. In the opener, Meilicke went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs to lead five Challengers with multiple hits, as Cascade Christian (19-3, 9-0 FWL) scored six runs in the first inning to take charge. Emily Knight added three hits, including a double, and Willard, Ali Modrell and Audrey Quast two apiece. In the second game, Meilicke went 5-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs, and Willard 4-for-5 with a double and five RBIs to pace the Challengers. Knight went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Willard struck out six in the circle in her second complete-game performance of the day to improve to 19-3. Douglas fell to 1-15, 1-11 in the FWL. Prep Baseball LAKEVIEW 2-12, ROGUE RIVER 1-0: At Lakeview, Rogue River dropped a first-game pitchers’ duel in eight innings, then was shutout in the five-inning nightcap in 2A/1A District 6 play. In the opener, Rogue River pitchers Nic Macuk and Derek Nelson combined for a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and one earned run allowed. The Chieftains (5-9, 3-4 Dist. 6) scored in the first inning when leadoff hitter Caden Tognoni was hit by a pitch, stole second and came home on Nelson’s single. Nelson had two of Rogue River’s three hits. Alex Smith, a senior pitcher, went the distance for Lakeview (11-4, 7-2), which is tied for the district lead with Lost River and Hosanna Christian. In Game 2, Rogue River got one hit off Honkers’ pitcher Conner Steward in the five-inning affair. Togoni doubled in the third inning for the Chieftains’ lone hit. softball.jpg
