Mazama prevails over IV KLAMATH FALLS - A switch to man-to-man defense and the irrepressible play of Levell Hesia helped Mazama avenge its lone loss in Skyline Conference play on Friday night. Using a zone defense in their first meeting, the Vikings were unable to put enough pressure on Illinois Valley and paid the ultimate price in losing a 66-65 overtime contest. That wasn't the case Friday as Mazama used its quickness on defense to stymie the fourth-ranked Cougars for a 60-34 triumph. "Every shot was pretty much contested," said Mazama coach Randy Rose. "They had a couple layups but they had very few easy shots." To wit, IV's leading scoring tandem of Justin Graven and Daniel Houston was limited to eight points combined on 3-for-16 shooting. The duo had 44 in the first meeting. "That was a big one," said Rose. "I thought we could win heading in, but winning by 26 ... I didn't think that was in the cards." When not putting a wrench in IV's offensive attack, Hesia was busy torching the Cougars for 30 points. Hesia added six assists and four steals. Eric Brosterhous also supplied a lift for Mazama (16-2, 9-1 Skyline), scoring 11 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Illinois Valley, which struggled in a loss Tuesday to North Valley, dropped to 14-5 overall and 8-2 in Skyline play. Derrick Schoner led the Chieftains (15-4, 8-2 Skyline) with 17 points, while Ryan Girodat had 13 and Jason Luchterhand 10. Kirk Cunningham paced Henley (3-15, 2-8) with 19 points. Sophomore guard Mike Smith paced the Pirates with seven points, while junior center Brady Rhodes had nine rebounds. Carl Fairburn had 13 points to lead the Honkers (8-12, 1-9 Skyline), while Derek Wright had 11 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Knights (7-12, 5-5).
