Bartels nets 41 points in Phoenix loss LAKEVIEW -- Andy Bartels has had some pretty flashy outings for the Phoenix Pirates. But the 6-foot senior guard soared where no previous Phoenix boys basketball player had gone before Tuesday, scoring 41 points. Even so, Lakeview outgunned the Pirates, 82-71, for a Skyline Conference victory. Bartels converted on 15 of 21 field goal attempts, sinking four 3-pointers, and nailed 7 of 11 free throws. He surpassed the previous school record of 37 points set by Ben Goodman against Yreka in 1996. Bartels' record outing only partly assuaged Phoenix coach Randy Shipley's outlook on his team's performance. "When you don't guard anybody in the first half, it leaves me pretty unhappy the rest of night," Shipley said. "There were only two pluses tonight, Andy having a huge game and that after being down 27, we actually cut it to six points with 45 seconds to go." Jacob Denbrook and Derek Strubel scored 24 points each for Lakeview as the Honkers jumped to a 27-12 advantage after one quarter and led 48-23 at the intermission. But Bartels erupted for 30 points in the second half. "It was a combination of Andy having the hot hand and the players getting the ball to him," Shipley said. "I don't think they (Yreka players) were too concerned about playing defense at that point."
