Junior Kendall Gielow was up to the challenge. Gielow erupted for a season-high 27 points and senior post Brent Johnson added 19 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots as the Panthers earned a hard-fought, 62-51 victory over the Titans in an opening-round game of the Abby’s Holiday Basketball Classic. With the win, South Medford (6-2) moved into a 7:45 semifinal matchup tonight against Aloha, a 53-45 winner over Red Bluff, Calif. West Salem dropped into the consolation bracket and plays Red Bluff at 4:15 p.m. today at South. Gielow, a transfer from North Medford, struggled to find his comfort zone with his new team early this season. He scored just one point in a season-opening loss to South Eugene and managed double figures just twice in South Medford’s first seven games. Advertisement But the 6-foot-7 forward sank a pair of 3-point baskets in the first period Tuesday to find an early rhythm and by game’s end had the look of a confident, self-assured player. "I got into that early rhythm and it just carried through," said Gielow, flashing a grin after the game. "I was a little stressed out in those early games just trying to fit in with new players and new coaches. "It feels great to be able to contribute like I did tonight." The Panthers needed Gielow’s prolific scoring night to counterbalance Davis, a 5-11 junior point guard who was nearly a one-man show for West Salem. Gielow’s rebound basket with 4:07 to play in the game gave South Medford a seemingly insurmountable 53-36 lead, but Davis still had plenty of ammunition in his arsenal. He drilled three 3- pointers and a 16-foot pull-up jumper over the next three minutes that pulled West Salem to within 58-49 with 52 seconds remaining. The Titans then knocked the ball loose and were about to get tied up for a jump ball when one of their players called a timeout they didn’t have. The transgression resulted in a technical foul and Gielow — who else? — calmly made both free throws with 47.7 seconds left that put the game on ice. "We played South Medford last summer, and so I knew what kind of team they have," Davis said. "I knew I had to come out and be aggressive." With Gielow and the powerful Johnson providing the impetus, South Medford was the aggressor in the first half, however. The Panthers clawed their way to a 19-12 lead after one period and extended their advantage to 30-16 at the half. But the Titans, a disciplined team under veteran coach Scott Cross, wouldn’t wither. Oliver Johnson scored back-to-back baskets to start the third period, and when Caleb Singleton hit a layup off a spectacular no-look pass from Davis and Johnson followed with a free throw, West Salem was suddenly within six at 35-29. South Medford, which scored on just one of its first eight second-half possessions, regrouped as Brent Johnson muscled in a layup and Gielow followed with a 17-foot jumper off an inbounds play. But West Salem’s Bryan drained a trey as the period ended that got the Titans within 39-32. The Panthers would again build their lead and the Titans would again come back, but Gielow was ultimately the difference-maker. He scored 12 points in the fourth quarter. "That team is loaded," said Cross of South Medford. "I’ve seen a lot of games this season, and if they’re not one of the top 10 teams in the state then something’s wrong. "I think we were a little intimidated by their size in the early going, but Davis kept us in the game." WEST SALEM (51) — Davis 30, Dunsworth 6, O.
