Howey wins twice, leads GPD trainers By Mail Tribune staff Oct 07, 2020 07:47 AM A A GRANTS PASS — Quinn Howey won two races at Grants Pass Downs to move into first place in the trainer standings Tuesday. Howey saddled winners in the first and sixth races and now has five wins among 16 starts, two victories ahead of three trainers tied for second — Emilio Guerrero, Jorge Rosales and Dustie Crystal. Winning Sound, with jockey McKenzie King, won the 5 1/2-furlong first race, and Joejoe’s Kingdom, with Taylor Smith aboard, took the sixth. It was one of two wins for Smith, matching David Martin for riders with two on the day. Martin captured the seventh race on Chiefs Lil Pearl. The mare took command on the backstretch of the 5 1/2-furlong race to hold off a nice effort on the rail by Thanks. Chiefs Lil Pearl has won five of eight starts at GPD, including four of her last five. The track, with 13 of its 16 races Monday and Tuesday televised on TVG, set a record for a two-day weekly total handle of $739,410. Included Tuesday was its highest on-track handle of the year, $22,250. Racing resumes Monday at 4 p.m. Gates open at 3.
