Chamberlin propels South to victory Saturday Oct 8, 2016 at 8:13 PM Oct 8, 2016 at 8:13 PM South Medford sophomore Ula Chamberlin took a year off from soccer to focus on basketball last season but is back on the pitch and played a big role for the Panthers’ girls soccer team Saturday in a 3-0 Southwest Conference win over Roseburg. Chamberlin opened the scoring in the fourth minute on a goal that was assisted by Courtney Herick, then picked up an assist on a goal by Liz Beattie in the 10th minute at South Medford High. Not done yet, Chamberlin also managed to earn an assist on Whitney Winans’ goal in the 58th minute as South Medford dominated the match and improved to 6-3-2 overall and 6-1-2 in SWC play. “She had a good day,” said Panthers head coach Chris Hollewijn. “She wanted to give it a shot again this year and dust off the cleats and she’s been doing well all season. She’s kind of been working toward this so it was nice to see it happen for her today.” Kaitlyn Weber recorded the shutout in goal for South, stopping a penalty kick by Roseburg (2-7-2, 1-6-2) with 10 minutes to play. NORTH MEDFORD 2, SHELDON 2: Megan Cowan scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to secure a Southwest Conference tie for North Medford at Hoffbuhr Field. Earlier, North Medford’s Mikayla Denn scored off an assist from Haley Hayes in the 55th minute to tie the game at 1-1 all. Brinley O’Neal had four saves for the Black Tornado (2-3-5 overall, 2-2-4 SWC) in a strong effort against Sheldon(10-0-1, 8-0-1). ASHLAND 2, SPRINGFIELD 0: At Springfield, with goals from Hannah Haptonstall and Mya Elder-Hammond, Ashland secured its second Midwestern League win. Lilly Annen and Olivia Webb each tallied an assist for the Grizzlies (7-2-1 overall, 2-0-1 MWL), and Taylor Buckley-McGinnis recorded five saves against Springfield (2-6-1, 1-2). THURSTON 6, EAGLE POINT 0: At Springfield, Eagle Point’s Audrey Jordan recorded 12 saves in a Midwestern League loss. Eagle Point dropped to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in MWL play, and Thurston improved to 5-4-3 and 1-3. CHURCHILL 10, CRATER 0: At Central Point, Crater remained winless in Midwestern League play at 0-3 and fell to 2-7-1 overall in the loss. ST. MARY’S 5, ROGUE RIVER 0: At Rogue River, Megan Michels and Maddie Wheelock scored two goals apiece to lead St. Mary’s to a District 5 win. Ibixica Alvarez, Gabi Castillo, Michels and Adrien Birmingham also recorded assists for the Crusaders (8-3, 5-0 Dist. 5) against Rogue River (2-5-1, 0-5).
