Play unfolds in 25th annual Big Al�s tourney ASHLAND � The top seeds in the men�s and women�s open divisions didn�t play during the opening day of the 25th Big Al�s tennis tournament Friday, but the three-day event will swing into full action today at Hunter Park and other tennis locations in Ashland. Six-time Big Al�s champion Todd Stanley is the No. 1 men�s open seed, while defending titlist Colleen Cohee received the top seed in the women�s open division. In the round of 16 of the men�s open 40s division, fourth-seeded Steve Schnugg of Medford advanced into the quarterfinals with a straight set victory over Dan Colleen of Chico, Calif., 6-3, 6-2. Michael Horton of Ashland moved into the semifinals of the men�s open 55 singles. In the women�s 4.0 singles, No. 1 seed Marie Sellke of Grants Pass lost on a default, but the next three highest seeds, including No. 3 Elizabeth Schoenleber of Ashland and No. 4 Laura Vaughn of Eagle Point, advanced to the quarterfinals.
