A road by any other name ... Recently you ran a column on street names that do not continue across intersections, prompting this letter about Lozier Lane, Ross Lane North and Ross Lane. There is confusion about Ross Lane North, a short street southeast of Ross Lane, a long road running from television station KTVL on Rossanley Drive to Old Military Road. Ross Lane North is on the north side, and Lozier Lane on the south side of the intersection with West Main Street. If ever there was a time for the county to end this confusion, now is the time. Major reconstruction of this intersection is now being completed. Ross Lane North should be renamed North Lozier Lane. Do you know if they might consider this change? -- Barbara J., Central Point It does not take an act of Congress, but a change in street name is an action that ultimately requires approval from county commissioners. Under current procedures, someone has to file an application and pay a $500 fee to the planning department, which would have to notify property owners about the proposed change. "To change it is a major undertaking, particularly for property owners and businesses along the route," said County Engineer Dale Petrasek, whose office keeps tabs on names for the county Highway and Street Guide. Names change rarely. The action that drew the most public attention in recent years was on March 24, 1993, when county commissioners renamed Dead Indian Road (County Road 722) east of Ashland as Dead Indian Memorial Road.
