Deadline to register for primary is April 28 By Mail Tribune staff Jan 24, 2020 12:00 AM A A I’m one of those voters who doesn’t belong to any political party because they all stink. That being said, I’m thinking about registering for a party for the May primary, otherwise I won’t get a say in who’s selected. What’s the deadline to register for a party and how fast can I change back to no party when the election is over? I hate to play this game, but politics just drives me nuts. I chalk it up to being a necessary evil. — Dale E., Medford You’ve got plenty of time to register as either a Democrat, Republican or whatever you prefer, Dale. The deadline for voter registration and to change party affiliation is April 28, just a few weeks before the May 19 primary. You can then switch back to being a nonaffiliated voter before the next election. But we should caution you that if you wait until close to the deadline to register for a party, you might end up getting two ballots in the mail. You’ll have to make sure you don’t fill out the ballot for a non-affiliated, but instead fill out the ballot for the party in which you registered. If you register for a party before the end of April, you should receive only one ballot based on your updated registration. The easiest way to change your voter registration information is to log on to the Oregon Secretary of State website, https://sos.oregon.gov/voting/Pages/myvote.aspx?lang=en.
