Grants Pass edges Ashland for state berth EAGLE POINT -- Ashland finished 26 strokes ahead of Grants Pass for second place in the overall Southern Oregon Conference boys golf standings. But that's all the solace the Grizzlies can take away after the Cavemen held off Ashland by two strokes on the final day of the Southern Oregon Conference district tournament. After falling 10 strokes behind Grants Pass following Monday's opening round, Ashland needed to finish 11 shots better than its counterpart Tuesday to nab the SOC's No. 2 seed in the state tournament. Roseburg ran away with the district title by posting a two-day total of 632 at Eagle Point Golf Course and a season-best total of 1,879. Grants Pass earned the second slot at state by finishing ahead of the Grizzlies, 653-651, in the two-day district tourney. "We played so well all year," said beleaguered Ashland coach Rich Mikula. "In every tournament before district we took either first or second place. But we had one bad round (Monday), and that knocked us out of a trip to state." Ashland scored a 317 in the first round, while Grants Pass came in at 307. The Grizzlies were able to make up some ground despite windy conditions Tuesday, but not enough to unseat Grants Pass. Despite being left out of the May 15-16 state tourney at Langdon Farms in Aurora, Mikula said he still has faith in the system that gives much weight to district performance. This is the second year it has been in place. "The rules apply equally to each team," he said. "There's always going to be a scenario whereby one of the teams will be hurt and one will benefit from it. I'm sure Grants Pass will represent (the SOC) well." Erik Hill of Grants Pass carded a 78 Tuesday to win medalist honors with a two-day total of 154. Mark Paulsen of Klamath Union and Jeremy Thorburn of Roseburg finished second at 156, followed by Ashland's Per Englund at 157 and South Medford's Steve Hilgendorf (159) and Roseburg's Jason Gaston (159). Roseburg's Eric House carded the low score of the day at 4-over-par 76 as wind forced most results in the mid-80s and 90s. "The conditions out there were just brutal," said North Medford coach Kevin Klabunde. "The wind was just howling. It was a real testing day."
