For his senior project, which is required for graduation, he has written a series of stories on other senior projects. On a typical day you might find Jonny Curtright hanging out at the local Starbucks, jamming with his band Lorena Bobbitt and the Hackers, or heading up to Roxy Ann Peak, either alone or with friends, to enjoy the silence. Jonny is a North Medford High School senior who was born and raised in Medford. He plays acoustic and electric guitars and has a job at Island Juice. What's the project? Jonny put together a benefit concert, "Rock for the Kids," at VIBES Main One and donated all of the proceeds to Kids Unlimited. Kids Unlimited is a free after-school program at 821 N. Riverside Ave. that provides a safe and recreational environment for kids 6 to 18 years old. Jonny has had experience with putting on concerts before but nothing of the magnitude of "Rock for the Kids." "I had never done anything with a venue this size before," said Jonny. Jonny started planning for the concert in early May. His main work consisted of finding sponsors to donate the thousands of dollars needed for advertising and equipment. He found seven main sponsors and raised enough money to run a radio ad. He also passed out 1,300 fliers. The concert was held on April 14 and drew 225 people. The five featured bands for the concert were all local. They were Merendo, Nothing Error, The Dead Horizon, One Sided and, of course, Lorena Bobbitt and the Hackers. The concert brought in about $1,300 after expenses, all of which was donated to Kids Unlimited. Jonny said he got a lot of help on the project from his mentor, Doug Hill, who owns a small record label called Mental Records. Why choose this project? When it comes to the actual concert, the decision was easy for Jonny. The real choice for him was who he would donate the proceeds to. "There are a lot of social programs around here," he said. He put the money where he thought it was most needed & 8212; with children. Jonny feels that kids who are born into a rough environment need more help than anyone else. "It's not their choice," Jonny said when referring to impoverished children. "They deserve the same opportunities as everyone else." Kids Unlimited was a prime choice because of its focus on needy children. How did this project make a difference? In addition to raising money for a good cause, Jonny said he hopes his concert will raise awareness about impoverished children in Medford. He knows that the money he donated can only go so far and that programs like Kids Unlimited need more community support. "The $1,300 sounds like a decent amount," said Jonny, "but it's really not. I'm hoping it helps the kids more indirectly." Jonny also feels his project made a difference in a more personal way. "My experience gave me a new respect for this profession," he said.
