Saturday at Finlay Field, the frowns and grimaces of 2003 were replaced by grins, laughter and a post-meet cheer as the Comets won their first district championship in 20 years. Jason James, running as if he had a rocket booster attached to his back, won four events and Greg Dallaire three as the Comets piled up 151 points. Runner-up Roseburg finished a distant second with 100 points, followed by South Medford (99½ ), North Medford (88), Grants Pass (76½ ), Klamath Union (62), Ashland (44½ ) and Eagle Point (41½ ). "We got some unexpected points in the triple jump, and our momentum just grew from there," Crater coach Hans Smith said. "These kids have stepped it up all year, and today they weren’t going to be denied." Advertisement Running into a stiff head wind, James won the 100-meter dash in 11.47 and the 110 high hurdles in 14.76. One hour later, the swift senior outran South Medford standout Ryan Neuenschwander to claim the 300 intermediates hurdles in 38.55, which is the fastest time in the state this season. Neuenschwander, who had been the state leader at 38.64, clocked 38.91 and finished second. "That was my first clean race (in the intermediate hurdles) in a long time," James said. "It’s the district meet. It’s the time to shine." James finished his day by running a 50.3 split on the Comets’ 4x400 relay squad that triumphed in a season’s-best time of 3:24.58. "Jason James cranked it up another notch today," Smith said. For that matter, so did Dallaire, who took on the grueling 400-800 double and won both races. The durable junior ran down Grants Pass’ Justin Ruyle on the homestretch of the 400 to win that event in 50.46 and later claimed the 800 in 1:58.07. The Comets got an unexpected boost when junior Geoff Donaldson finished second in the 800 in 1:58.87. Donaldson came into the meet with the 10th-fastest time, but he got a big dose of confidence during Thursday’s qualifying round when he shaved four seconds off his previous best with a 1:59.65 clocking. "After what happened Thursday, I knew I had a shot," said Donaldson, who earned a berth in next week’s Class 4A state meet with his second-place showing. "That really opened my eyes. "That race is so mental, and my coach (Crater distance mentor Justin Loftus) had me pumped up." Crater’s other significant bonus points Saturday came in the triple jump, where Dustin Meza finished fourth and Mike Scales sixth. Roseburg’s Isaiah Smith won the event with a lifetime- best leap of 44-5. "We didn’t even figure on Scales placing," Smith said. The boys running events got off to an exciting start Saturday when North Medford upset the field in the 4x100 relay. Ryan Weisz, running the anchor leg for the Black Tornado, pulled past Neuenschwander on the homestretch and then held off hard-charging Klamath Union freshman Matt Porter for the win. North Medford was clocked in 44.11, South Medford in 44.14 and Klamath Union in 44.18. "That’s the first time we’ve gotten our handoffs down all season," a jubilant Weisz said. "Me and (third leg) Brian Kosok dropped the baton our last two meets, but we got our act together today." In other finals Saturday: South Medford’s Alan Phillips won the javelin for the second straight year with a throw of 174-8. The Panthers’ Glen Pennington, who had to give up baseball this year after breaking his hand in a snowboarding accident in January, was a surprise second at 171-11. Pennington’s toss was a lifetime best by more than five feet. Distance standout Kevin Pellegrino of Klamath Union added the 1,500 title to the 3,000 crown he collected Thursday. Pellegrino clocked a season’s-best time of 3:57.56. Roseburg’s Gavin Weaver was a strong second in 3:59.93. Klamath Union’s Marcus Schaaf held off North Medford’s Jesse Johnson to win the 200 in 23.33. North Medford’s David Faaeteete put the shot 56-1 on his final attempt to overtake Eagle Point’s Jacob Olson, who threw 53-4½ . During the preliminary round, Faaeteete lobbed his shot to the right of the sector and out of bounds. The 12-pound iron ball bounced off a steel fence and landed on the foot of a woman spectator, who was taken to a Roseburg hospital for evaluation. "I didn’t really want to throw anymore after I hit that woman," Faaeteete said. "I’ve never had a throw get away from me like that." But after meeting with North Medford throws coach Mike Schaan, Faaeteete regrouped and launched his winning throw.
