I-5 north closed past Redding due to heavy snow Jan 18, 2017 12:00 AM A A All northbound traffic on Interstate 5 is being held temporarily north of Redding, California, due to severe weather and road conditions, according to a news release from CALTRANS. CALTRANS has closed northbound traffic at Fawndale, 10 miles north of Redding, because of white-out conditions with poor visibility, according to CALTRANS spokeswoman Trisha Coder. Earlier in the day, crews had been screening northbound trucks on I-5 to be sure they were carrying chains, according to Coder. At about noon, the Oregon Department of Transportation also held southbound traffic temporarily while crews responded to several vehicles spun out on the southbound pass, according to ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming. Road cams showed trucks stacked up in heavy snow at the summit. About 6 inches of snow fell on the pass between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., according to Leaming, and snow was still coming down "hard and continuously." Drivers of all but 4x4s should expect to chain up, according to Leaming. "We've got full winter going on right now," Leaming said. ODOT also advised drivers to carry chains on Highway 140 following reports of packed snow conditions near Lake of the Woods as of about 3 p.m.
