SCAVENGER HUNT: The Jacksonville History Scavenger Hunt will be available through Oct. 14 to raise money for the Nyumbani Orphanage in Kenya. The contest, a word puzzle with answers found at Jacksonville landmarks, costs $10 to enter. The money is sent directly to the orphanage. SUMMER DISCOVERY: The North Mountain Park Nature Center will offer Discovery Kits for children ages 6 to 11 and their parents or guardians from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 26, at the park, 620 N. LITHIA PARK WALKS: The Ashland Parks and Recreation Department will offer guided walks in Lithia Park in Ashland on Saturday, Aug. 12 and 19. Walks also will be offered every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday through September. Participants should meet at 10 a.m. at the entrance to the park at the downtown plaza. Trained naturalists will discuss trees, flowers, birds, climate, water, geology and history. Admission is free. Call 488-0231. HISTORIC WALKING TOURS: Ben Truwe unlocks the secrets of the past during his "Haunted Brothels and Opium Dens of Medford" walking tours offered at 11 a.m. Saturdays. Find out where Medford residents "lynched the knocker and burned the hammer." The free tours last about two hours and are suitable for all ages. SCIENCEWORKS: "The Sky's the Limit," a series of activities that includes the exploration of airplanes, helicopters, rockets, stars, kites, weather and birds, will take place through the month of August at ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum. A Summer Star Field Trip to view the Perseid meteor shower will be offered Saturday, Aug. 12. The trip costs $15 per person. Call 482-6767, Ext. 27, to register. An exploration of the cosmos will be presented through Sunday, Aug. 13, at the museum. Planetarium shows will be presented at noon and 3 p.m., and visitors can view the sun through solar telescopes and build star finders. The planetarium shows are free with museum admission. "Kites and Flights" will be held Wednesday through Sunday, Aug. 16-20. The Southern Oregon Windchasers will present kite-flying demonstrations. Visitors may bring their own kites to fly or make their own at the museum. ScienceWorks offers interactive state-of-the-art exhibits, live performances and hands-on exploration for all ages. SUMMER READING AND MOVIES: "Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales," the 2006 Jackson County Library's summer reading program, is open through Aug. 26 to children ages 3 and older and includes activities, prizes and drawings. Kids can sign up at any branch of the library. When the kids read (or for young kids, are read) 10 or more books during the summer, they are eligible for prizes such as stickers, bookmarks and pizza coupons. If they read 20 or more books, they receive a free drink and a pass to ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum in Ashland. For reading 10 or more books they also are entered into drawings for gift certificates and admission to special events. Kids accompanied by a parent can head to the Central Library, 205 S. Central Ave., Medford, for "Saturday Matinee at the Library." "The Cat from Outer Space" will be presented at 2 p.m. Aug. 12. OLD TIME MOVIE NIGHT: "Dangerous," a 1935 Warner Brothers film starring Bette Davis and Franchot Tone, will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, as part of Old Time Movie Night at the Christian Church of Ashland, corner of Fourth and B streets, Ashland. "Dangerous" tells the story of an upper class playboy who falls for a surly down-on-her-luck woman, played by Davis. "Sands of Iwo Jima," a 1948 war drama starring John Wayne and John Agar, will be shown at 8 p.m. Wayne plays the tough Sergeant Striker who finds himself at odds with a brash young recruit played by Agar. An old-time intermission reel featuring classic snack bar ads will be shown between films, and a snack bar will be open all evening. The box office opens at 6 p.m. Admission is free. Call 482-1561. MOVIES IN THE PARK: Medford Parks and Recreation presents U.S. Cellular Movies in the Park at dusk Saturdays through Aug. 19 at the amphitheater at Bear Creek Park, Siskiyou Blvd. and Highland Drive, Medford. "The Goonies," starring Sean Astin and Josh Brolin, will be presented Aug. 12. The Goonies are a group of seven young friends from a small Northwest town who find themselves seeking the treasure of the pirate One-Eyed Willie. Admission is free. RAILROAD PARK: Medford's Railroad Park is home to the Southern Oregon Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, the Rogue Valley Model Railroad Club, the Southern Oregon Live Steamers, the Southwest Oregon Large-Scale Trains and the Morse Telegraph Club. Activities at the park include small-scale steam and diesel train rides, and displays of full-size and miniature trains, a historic locomotive and caboose and an antique telegraph service are available. Hours are from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second and fourth Sundays of each month through Oct. 31. The park is at Table Rock Road and Berrydale Ave., just a few blocks north of the Rogue Valley Mall. Stage Road, Medford. The Farm is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and offers activities such as a petting zoo with goats, chickens, sheep and pigs, tractor rides, a general store and pony rides. Tuesday, Aug. 15 GROWERS MARKET: The Rogue Valley Growers and Crafters Market is open from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the Ashland Armory, 1420 E. Main St., Ashland, through October. The market offers flowers, produce, plants, baked goods and crafts. Call 261-5045. STORYTELLING: Don Doyle, winner of the National Storytelling Network's Lifetime Achievement Award, will present tales for the "Storytelling @ Your Library" programs to be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 15-16, at three branches of the Jackson County libraries. Doyle, an actor, director, teacher and professional storyteller, has received other prestigious awards such as a Campton Bell Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education, a Medallion of Merit from the National Society of Arts and Letters and a Creative Drama Award for Human Awareness from the Children's Theatre Association of America. He is a featured storyteller at some of the largest festivals around the United States and overseas. Doyle is scheduled to perform at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the Ashland Library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, and at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Medford Library, 205 S. Another performance is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the White City Library, 3143 Avenue C, White City. Popcorn will be served after the performance. JOSEPHINE COUNTY FAIR: The county fair will be held Tuesday through Saturday, Aug. 15-19, at the fairgrounds off of the Redwood Highway in Grants Pass. The grandstand entertainment will include Mark Chesnutt on Aug. 15, Air Supply on Aug. 16 and Terri Clark on Aug. 17. A Monster Truck Spectacular will be presented Aug. 18 and 19. Grandstand seating is free with fair admission. The fair will have a carnival, street magicians and livestock shows. Admission is $8; $3 for children ages 6 to 12. Friday, Aug. 18 CREEK EXPLORATION: The staff at the North Mountain Nature Park will host a day of exploration along Ashland Creek from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18. Visitors can see what animals and insects are living in the creek. There will be swimming and snorkeling. Participants should bring towels, swimsuits, long-sleeved shirts and pants. Saturday, Aug. 19 BREAKFAST: A breakfast offering biscuits and gravy, omelets, scrambled eggs, ham, sausage, potatoes, pancakes, fruit, juice and coffee will be held from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at the Medford Masonic Center, 975 N. Phoenix Road, Medford. Cost is $6. CARS OF SUMMER: The Ashland Elks Lodge will host its annual "Cars of Summer" show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, in the lodge's parking lot on Lithia Way in Ashland. PRESCOTT PARK TOURS: Medford Parks and Recreation will offer tours of Prescott Park, a 1700-acre site on Roxy Ann Peak adjacent to the southern urban growth boundary of the City of Medford, on Saturday, Aug. 19. The narrated tours include a box lunch, water and views of the Rogue Valley. Visitors may hike and take photographs. Anyone interested in the tour should meet before 11 a.m. at the Springbrook Road parking lot between Lone Pine and Roberts roads in Medford. COMMUNITY BARBECUE AND YARD SALE: The Applegate Valley Historical Society will hold a barbecue and yard sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at Grace Gardens Park, 15095 Highway 238 (next to the Applegate Store), Applegate.
