OSU can match Mizzou's win streak today Monday Apr 3, 2017 at 7:45 PM Apr 3, 2017 at 7:45 PM By Bob LundebergCorvallis Gazette-Times CORVALLIS — The Oregon State baseball team had already broken numerous records entering last weekend’s matchup with Stanford. But the Beavers weren’t done winning. Top-ranked OSU outscored then-No. 11 Stanford 25-8 to sweep the three-game Pac-12 set at Sunken Diamond. A 7-0 shutout in Sunday’s finale was the Beavers’ (24-1, 9-0) school-record 19th consecutive win, the longest active streak in Division I. A victory Tuesday evening at Portland (6-21) would match Missouri’s 20 wins earlier this season for the longest streak of the year. After facing the Pilots, OSU will host Utah (12-13, 3-6) — the Pac-12’s defending champion — for a series beginning at 5:35 p.m. Friday. The Beavers are 24-1 for the first time in school history, besting the 1962 club’s 23-1 start. OSU is the only team since then-Pac-10 unification in 1999 to win its first nine league games. Other notable accomplishments include: — OSU has won 13 straight Pac-12 games dating back to last year. — The Beavers have also won 13 in a row at Sunken Diamond and are 18-3 on the Farm since 2005. — During the winning streak, OSU has outscored its opponents 124-37. Six of the victories have been shutouts. — The Beavers finished 15-0 in March. TOPPING THE POLLS: Oregon State remained atop the D1Baseball.com Top 25 for the third consecutive week. Louisville (24-3) was ranked second, followed by TCU (22-5), Clemson (24-5) and North Carolina (22-6). Arizona (20-7, 5-4) moved from 13th to ninth while Stanford (14-9, 2-4) tumbled from 11th to 21st. The Beavers are ranked No. 1 in every major national poll and have already swept the Wildcats and Cardinal. In the RPI, OSU is ranked first and Arizona second. Oregon (17-8, 5-4), which lost a series at Utah last week, is the next-highest Pac-12 team at 49th. Stanford checks in at No. 51. PAC-12 UPDATE: Oregon State has separated itself in the Pac-12 standings. The Beavers have a three-game lead on UCLA (13-12, 6-3) for first place. The Bruins, who have won seven of their last eight following a rocky start, host OSU later this month. Washington (16-10, 4-2) sits in third place while Oregon and Arizona are four games back. OSU will face the Huskies and Ducks on the road. MLB BEAVERS: Former Oregon State stars Jacoby Ellsbury (New York Yankees), Darwin Barney (Toronto), Matt Boyd (Detroit), Andrew Susac (Milwaukee) and Conforto (New York Mets) all made opening-day rosters. Ellsbury is entering his 11th season in Major League Baseball and his fourth with the Yankees. The outfielder, who played at OSU from 2003-05, has 1,282 career hits. Barney starred at OSU from 2005-07, helping guide the Beavers to three College World Series appearances and a pair of national titles. The infielder is entering his third season with Toronto and eighth overall in MLB. Boyd pitched for the Beavers from 2010-13 and has been named the Tigers’ fifth starter. He was 6-5 with a 4.53 ERA in 20 appearances last year. Susac is starting the year on the disabled list. The catcher played at OSU in 2010-11 and has appeared in 96 MLB games. Conforto, an outfielder who was drafted in 2014, is in his third season with the Mets.
