Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend June 26, 2005 Upsets plentiful at Morgan Stanley Open It was a day of upsets in the men’s and women’s open singles divisions of the $15,000 Morgan Stanley Open tennis tournament at the Rogue Valley Swim & Tennis Club Saturday. Michael Calkins defeated second-seeded Michael Kogan in one of two men’s semifinal singles matches and unseeded North Bend High junior-to-be Kelcy McKenna knocked off second-seeded Momei Qu of Portland in the women’s open singles finals. The men’s open singles finals pitting Calkins against Sweden native Sven Swinnen will begin at 12:30 p.m. today. The winner will pocket a $2,500 purse. The fifth-seeded Swinnen, who upset top-seeded Victor Romero in the quarterfinals, rallied for a three-set victory over Michael Jessup, 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6- 4. After winning a second-set tie-breaker, Swinnen carried the momentum into the third set and Jessup seemed to tire. Swinnen, a 2005 graduate of the University of Oregon, was the Ducks’ top singles player and was ranked as high as 10th in the nation collegiately this season. Advertisement The sixth-seeded Calkins, who was part of the 2004 University of Illinois national championship team, defeated Kogan, 6-3, 7-5. Calkins used effective serving and good anticipation to control the match. McKenna proved her 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 semifinal victory over No. 1-seeded Ashley Joelson was no fluke when she dominated Qu 6-2, 6-2 in the finals. The 15-year-old McKenna has won the state Class 3A singles title two years in a row. Neither Joelson nor Qu could counter the consistent hard pace of McKenna’s attack.
