Mail Tribune 100, June 7, 1922 By Alissa Corman Jun 07, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago June 7, 1922 COUNCIL DECIDES TO GIVE BETTER FIRE PROTECTION With all members present except Mr. Dressler, the city council last night took steps to give the new warehouse district of the city adequate fire protection, to provide hitching rack accommodations for the farmers visiting the city, and to abolish a number of complained of nuisances in various parts of the city. It has been a matter of grave concern for some time to the councilmen and citizens with investments in the warehouse district which has grown up south from 12th and Front streets, with still more plants talked of being erected in that section, that this district should be given better fire protection. Therefore, the council last night, after brief discussion, authorized City Superintendent C. W. Davis to purchase at once a car load of six-inch water pipe and several hydrants, and as soon as this equipment arrives a six-inch water pipe extension of about 800 feet with hydrants located at advantageous points will be made south through the new warehouse district. Practically the only hitching rack left in the down town district was done away with recently when a large bill board was erected at the northeast corner of South Bartlett and Eighth streets. Since then farmers have been complaining about the lack of hitching accommodations to the merchants. Louis Ulrich last night appeared before the council in this matter as a representative of the retail merchants. The councilmen were all agreed that adequate hitching racks must be provided as soon as possible, and authorized the council street committee, Messrs. Dressler, Gaddis and Antle to establish such convenient accommodations as soon as possible. MEDFORD LEGION JOIN IN BOOSTING PROSPERITY WEEK The local American Legion post voted last night to participate in the Prosperity Week celebration by staging their long deferred “Jacksonville, Days of ‘49,” if the project meets with the approval of the Chamber of Commerce and Merchants Bureau. Seeley V. Hall who has had the matter of the ‘49 celebration in hand will confer with the business men in regard to adding this attraction to the celebration next week. Delegates were nominated last night for the state legion convention and will be voted upon at the next meeting. Medford post is allowed three delegates under their present membership and if the post can secure twenty more members they will be entitled to one more delegate. An effort to secure the needed members is to be made and in this connection it was brought out that several men who are ex-members of the post are wearing their legion buttons but have not paid their dues. The membership committee expressed the hope that those who are in this category will re-establish their right to wear the button and enable the post to have as large a representation as possible at the convention. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
