LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Feb. 3 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 3, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 3, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Supporting the county My husband received a speeding ticket on Nov. 27 going 36 in a 25 mph zone. He is 67 years old and this is the first ticket he has ever received. We paid the fine of $160 by mail as it was too costly to drive 200 miles to appear in court. We received a $30 discount. My husband is on Social Security, an extremely safe driver, was a school bus driver for many years, a first-time offender going 36 mph! Are law-abiding seniors covering the court costs for those who don't pay their fines or show up to court? Are Social Security recipients considered so well off that they can afford such huge traffic citations? Obviously we do not qualify for the "affluenza" defense. Beware seniors — we are obviously supporting Jackson County! Karen Wagoner Albany Trump would set us back Donald Trump is trying to make “politically incorrect” fashionable. If, as a schoolboy, I had said to classmates the things Trump has brazenly uttered to the press, his opponents and those who dare to oppose him, my father would have washed my mouth out with soap. Being respectful of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, disability and even political differences are not just “politically correct.” They are morally correct. All of us have harbored discriminatory thoughts occasionally, but the saving grace, thus far, of the progress of human civilization and this great country is that, despite setbacks and halting progress, society gradually has become less tribal, more accepting, less violent and, yes, more civilized. Trump would set that progress back generations. There is no shortage of narcissistic, misogynistic, autocratic demagogues in the world. They come and they go. What really troubles me is that apparently 40 percent of the GOP thinks this one would make a good president. Bruce Van Zee Medford Anybody but Walden So Greg Walden is sorry one of the terrorists in Malheur County is dead, but he still refuses to call out the truth about these seditionist traitors, who have taken up arms against the rightful government of the United States. His speech in Congress was a masterpiece of parsing, and he managed to jump in the air and come down clearly astraddle the issue. He was really harsh on the provocateurs, saying as forcefully as possible that their armed threatening of federal agents was "inappropriate." This man is an embarrassment to Oregon, to the Congress and most especially to the people who are allegedly represented by him. Anybody But Walden, next time around.
