Panthers start girls slate in style EAGLE POINT - South Medford's at it again. Coming off three consecutive Southern Oregon Conference co-championships in girls soccer, the Panthers started league action Tuesday with a 5-0 road win over Eagle Point. Senior forward Erin Reno scored in the 14th and 53rd minutes to boost her team-leading total to seven, and junior stopper Liz Meyerding, junior central midfielder Heidi Meador and freshman forward Kelsey Corbin notched a goal apiece. Senior central midfielder Colleen Salisbury dished two assists, and Meador had one for South (5-2-1 overall, 1-0 SOC). A first-team all-SOC selection in 2000, Salisbury recently moved to the midfield from forward, and Panthers coach Buzz Thielemann is enjoying the new look. "Colleen's ability to distribute the ball is great," he said. "If it was American football, she'd be (former Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan) Marino." Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Steiger turned away eight Eagles shots in teaming with junior Sarah Bryan for South's shutout. Eagle Point (5-2-1, 0-1 SOC) was led by sophomore forward Alissa Goslin, who fired seven of the Eagles' eight shots, and sophomore goalkeeper Summer Adams, who earned praise from Thielemann. * NORTH MEDFORD 6, CRATER 1 - At Central Point, North Medford's McKenzie Weiler scored a hat trick in the Southern Oregon Conference-opening win. Weiler notched two goals in a first half that ended with the Black Tornado leading 4-1. The senior center midfielder, who now has seven goals in two games, tallied a late score for the final margin. Lisa Munyon, Nicole Vilarino and Emily Schuler also added goals for North. Jessica LaFontaine scored the lone goal for Crater (4-3, 0-1 SOC) early in the first half, tying it at 1-1. North Medford improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. GRANTS PASS 3, ASHLAND 1 - At Ashland, Natasha Crook scored two goals to lead Grants Pass to a Southern Oregon Conference opening-game win. Crook gave the Cavers a 1-0 lead heading into the break. Jackie Pilcher put Grants Pass (5-0-1, 1-0 SOC) back on top 2-1 following an Ashland score, and Crook sealed the win with goals in the 55th and 60th minutes. ROSEBURG 1, KLAMATH UNION 0 - At Roseburg, Morgan Downie scored a first-half goal and the Roseburg defense made it hold up in the Southern Oregon Conference win. Downie put the Indians (5-2-1, 1-0 SOC) up 1-0 just before halftime on a penalty kick. Returning second-team all-SOC defender Amanda Stribling helped shore up a Roseburg defense that limited the Pelicans to 10 shots on goal. Boys SOUTH MEDFORD 8, EAGLE POINT 0 - Corey O'Neill scored two goals as South Medford rolled to a Southern Oregon Conference opening-game win at Fichtner-Mainwaring. O'Neill began with goals in the second and 10th minutes, and Daniel Hathaway and Pat Lower also scored to put the Panthers up 4-0 at the half. Cory Harrell, Spencer Hunter, Jon Klenke and Daniel Potter scored second-half goals in the rout. ASHLAND 2, GRANTS PASS 1 - At Grants Pass, Ashland striker Scott Beaver was taken down twice in the penalty area and Matt Sharp converted both first-half penalty kicks as the undefeated Grizzlies (6-0, 1-0 SOC) prevailed at Mel Ingram Field. Sharp's goals were sandwiched around a score by Sten Erickson of Grants Pass at the 28th minute. A key play was a stop by Ashland junior goalkeeper Josh Dunn on a Caveman penalty kick midway through the second half. Dunn entered the match with three straight shutouts. Grants Pass had a 14-13 edge in shots on goal. KLAMATH UNION 1, ROSEBURG 0 - At Klamath Falls, Tyler Casey scored the game-winning goal late in the second half as Klamath Union won its SOC opener.
