Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 14, 2005 Pep talk ignites Black Tornado boys in victory SOC Soccer North Medford High first-year boys soccer coach Matt Soper gave sophomore striker Leo Keiser a little pep talk prior to the Black Tornado’s Southern Oregon Conference match against Crater Tuesday at Hoffbuhr Field. It worked. Keiser scored two goals in the first 18 minutes and three in all to lift the Tornado to a 4-2 victory. "That was a breakout game for us in general and Leo in particular," Soper said. "He used his quickness today and made some great plays." The 6-foot, 165-pound Keiser took a crossing pass from Tyler Svitak and blasted home a goal in the 12th minute to give North a quick 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, he took a through pass from Lars Slesland and scored again. Advertisement Keiser’s final tally came in the ninth minute of the second half off an assist from Colton Major. Slesland registered North Medford’s final goal off a pass from Dusty Andries. Crater’s goals came from Thaigo Olivevia in the 36th minute of the first half and from Kyle Ratty in the 32nd minute of the second half. North Medford moved to 1-1 in the SOC and 2-1 overall with the win. Crater dropped to 0-2 and 0-4 overall. "It really helped us to get up quickly like we did today," Soper said. "We’ve got a young team (seven sophomores in the starting lineup) and we’ll take all the confidence we can get." Soper credited sophomore fullbacks John Clarke and Andy Robinson, junior fullback Colton Major and junior sweeper Matt Kinsella with solid defensive play. SOUTH MEDFORD 3, KLAMATH UNION 2 — At Klamath Falls, South Medford came back from a 2-1 deficit to overtake Klamath Union in the SOC contest. With South trailing by a goal 20 minutes into the second half, freshman Humberto Cortez and Matt Mendoza connected to tie the game at 2-2. David Bergin then assisted Alex Rodriguez to put the Panthers up for good five minutes later. South (1-2, 1-0 SOC) first struck in the 15th minute when Moises Tamariz booted in a pass by Alex Arizaga. Luis Ortega and Dominic Agnimel scored for the Pelicans. ASHLAND 4, GRANTS PASS 2 — At Ashland, Grizzlies striker Rodrigo Ramos did just that in the SOC game — striking three times to lead Ashland over Grants Pass. Defending SOC champion Ashland (2-0) went into the half with a 2-0 lead after Ramos first scored in the ninth minute and once again 20 seconds before the break. After another Ashland score, Grants Pass (2-1, 1-1 SOC) came storming back with two goals from Matt Thomas in a four-minute span to make it 3-2. Ramos then struck again, this time with an assist from Joe Fallon, to seal the victory for Ashland with 11 minutes to play. Girls SOUTH MEDFORD 7, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At South Medford, Courtney Jung pulled the hat trick, including the final two South Medford goals within a two-minute span. Shanae Coker put the Panthers’ up 5-0 30 seconds into the second half off a pass from Jung. The Panthers’ (2-0 SOC) Kendall Gallop assisted on all three of Jung’s goals and scored one herself. ROSEBURG 4, EAGLE POINT 1 — At Eagle Point, Julie Piper had two assists and knocked down the last two goals for Roseburg to put Eagle Point away in the SOC match. After the Eagles’ Haley Ward scored the opening goal midway into the first half, the Indians picked up the pace with a late first-half goal by Elizabeth Cruz to tie it at 1-all. The Indians took advantage of a short-handed and fatigued Eagles (0-2 SOC) team in the second half by scoring three goals. Goalie Ali Foster had four saves for the Indians (1-1 SOC). GRANTS PASS 6, ASHLAND 0 — At Ashland, Grants Pass put five goals on the board in the first half to put Ashland away early in the SOC match. Abby Klingel had a hand in four of those first-half goals for the Cavers, with two assists and two goals. Sophomore Lorine Cruz closed out the scoring in the 77th minute for the Cavers (2-0 SOC). GP goalie Christa Krug recorded her first shutout of the season, making four saves in the process.
