St. Mary's closes in on SCL title The stakes were high for the St. Mary's boys basketball team heading into Friday's home game with Gilchrist. A win would give the Crusaders at least a share of the Southern Cascade League title with only two league games remaining. Thatcher Jones scored 19 points as the Crusaders opened up an early double-digit lead en route to a 73-41 victory over Gilchrist. St. Mary's took a 16-2 lead after the first quarter and held a comfortable 42-13 advantage at the half. "We knew what was at stake and we came out very focused to start the game," said St. Mary's coach Tim Pflug. "The kids put their minds to it and played outstanding defense." Jones led a balanced Crusaders' attack with 19 points and seven assists, while Michael Fiddler added 14 points and three blocks. Adam Ernst led Gilchrist with 17 points. "We are playing very well as a team over the last few games," said Pflug. "We are moving the ball around and getting it to the open guy on offense. That's why our scoring is so balanced." CASCADE CHRISTIAN 58, LOST RIVER 57, OT - At Merrill, Tyson Walker, who was inserted into the lineup late in the game to replace an injured starter, hit the game-winning shot as time expired in overtime. Walker also had a chance to win the game in regulation, but his 3-point attempt rattled out. Lost River's Paul Donahoe hit a 3-point bucket with six seconds left in the extra session for a 57-56 lead. Following a timeout, Brandon Fair drove to the basket and found Walker for the 15-foot game-winning jumper. Mychal Sha had 17 points and seven assists to lead the Challengers (13-8, 6-2 SCL), which clinched home-court advantage throughout the SCL playoffs. Jon Gettman had seven steals. Skyline A League Boys BUTTE FALLS 82, NORTH LAKE 44 - At Butte Falls, Nick Rodgers and Tyler Hersom, Butte Falls' only upperclassmen, each posted double-doubles on senior night, which also marked their last home game, in the Skyline A League contest. Hersom scored 18 points and six blocks, Rodgers tallied 17 points and six assists and each had 11 rebounds. The Loggers (16-6, 10-3 Sky A), in a battle for the second playoff berth with Hosanna Christian, ends the regular season at New Hope tonight. Triad converted only 32 percent of its shots, with Brighton Academy coming in at 24 percent.
