No. 8 Crater girls rout Yreka, 76-30 PREP ROUNDUP CENTRAL POINT -- Crater roared off to a 47-10 halftime lead, then coasted home Tuesday night as the No. 8 Comets opened their girls basketball season with a convincing 76-30 rout of visiting Yreka, Calif. Crater forced 41 turnovers -- while losing the ball just seven times itself -- and connected on 32-of-57 (56.1 percent) shots from the field. Sophomores Sarah Yager and Amy Denson tossed in 14 points apiece, while junior Skye Hemphill added 13 for the Comets. Sophomore Sarah Pool had seven of Crater's 28 steals, while Jody McLeod, Hemphill and Yager had five apiece. Junior Bre Johnson had 10 rebounds and Denson seven. Junior Janell Sapienza chipped in with six assists. Crater coach David Heard wasn't pleased with his team's 25 fouls or the Comets' 10-of-16 free throw shooting. "Other than that, it was hard to tell," Heard said. "The real test will be this weekend. Then we'll have a good idea of where we are at and what we have." Crater plays host in the four-team Airport Chevrolet Tip-off Tournament this weekend. The Comets play Reno, Nev., Friday night and either North Bend or South Salem on Saturday. Boys CRATER 47, YREKA 42 -- At Yreka, Calif., Steve Darnell's jumper with 1:30 to play gave Crater its first lead of the second half and the Comets held on for a season-opening victory. Chris Wright and P.J. Price each hit two free throws in the final minute to clinch the non-conference victory for Crater (1-0). Brent Foster led the Comets with 13 points, including four 3-pointers in the first quarter, and Andy Haas added nine in a game where both teams struggled to connect from the field. Yreka was led by 6-foot-11 post Matt Short. The junior dropped in 21 points despite a sagging Crater defense. Howard had 22 points and five steals for the Cougars (1-0), while Gordon scored a career-high 24 points. Gordon also notched 10 rebounds, five blocked shots and five assists in a stellar all-around effort. Neal Blythe added 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Cougars, who enjoyed a 43-12 halftime edge. Dan Lockhard paced New Hope with 19 points, with 15 of those coming in the second half.
