LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, July 3 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 3, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 3, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Brown deserves credit I cannot agree with the main point of Matt Witt’s criticisms of Gov. Kate Brown (June 29) — that she serves moneyed interests. Space permits me to address only one of his arguments — that she didn’t support raising the state’s minimum wage to $15 but went with a smaller raise. I was a part of the $15 Now! campaign, and regret that we didn’t win. But the absence of Brown’s support wasn’t the problem. The state AFL-CIO was pushing for a $13.50 figure. And in the 2015 general session, Senate President Peter Courtney wouldn’t let any bills mandating a raise come before the chamber. We simply couldn’t win at the Legislature. We could have gone to the ballot this year, but that effort would have been costly with no guarantee of victory. After Governor Brown helped get an intelligent compromise through the short session this year, I told her that the six-year step up to the top levels was far too long. Still, it was a major victory for low wage workers, and she deserves some of the credit. Herbert Rothschild Phoenix Act of kindness I'm trying to locate a gentleman that was so kind to assist me when I fell in JC Penney on July 10, 2015. He was comforting and stayed with me until the paramedics had taken me to the hospital. I would like to personally thank him for his assistance and compassion. No one should be subjected to the taunts and threats that occurred to one of our wonderful OSF actors. I was also appalled by the decision of the editor to use the headline, "The KKK is alive and well here." It gave the impression that the KKK is a here and present reality in Ashland. Our community needs to be aware of these kind of blatant racist incidents, but the headline gave the reader the impression that the KKK actually is active in Ashland. This was one man's racist rantings, not an established fact. Yes, we need awareness and positive action, but we don't need sensational headlines. I also wonder about the Ashland Police Department's decision not to pursue this incident as a hate crime. More investigation is needed. The words of the perpetrator were meant to hurt and should be construed as a threat.
