Local report North AAU basketball tryout set for Saturday Tryouts for a North Medford AAU boys basketball team will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the North High gym. From two to four sixth-graders are needed to fill out the team. For more information, call 857-4916. Tryout Saturday for Ashland AAU hoops Tryouts for a boys seventh- and eighth-grade AAU basketball team in Ashland are Saturday in the Ashland High gymnasium. Tryouts for eighth-graders will be from 10-11 a.m., and tryouts for seventh-graders will be 11 a.m. to noon. For more information, call Ed Houghton at 482-5723. Wrestling clinic slated for North North Medford High School coach Ken Thompson will host a wrestling clinic for kids in grades 1-8 Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. in North's wrestling room. Young wrestlers will be instructed by Thompson and members of North's varsity squad in the basic skills of the sport. Registration is at 12:30 p.m. both days. The fee is $10. For information, call Thompson at the school at 776-8748. Gymnastics meet Saturday in Medford The Oregon Sports Center will be host Saturday to sectional competition for level 5 gymnasts. Julian qualifies for national cross country ASHLAND -- Southern Oregon University senior Rebekah Julian has become the first Raider female cross country athlete in five years to qualify for the NAIA championship meet. Julian's time of 20 minutes, 1.83 seconds on the 5-kilometer Blue Lake Park course in Portland last Saturday was a personal record and placed her eighth in the Cascade Conference championship. The former Ashland High star will represent SOU at the national meet in Kenosha, Wis., on Nov. 21. Civil War luncheon Wednesday in Medford The annual Civil War luncheon for fans of Oregon and Oregon State football will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Doubletree Hotel, 200 N. Riverside, Medford. The two schools meet Nov. 21 at OSU in Corvallis. Special guests include athletic directors Mitch Barnhart of Oregon State and Bill Moos of Oregon. There also will be a live teleconference with coaches Mike Riley of OSU and Mike Bellotti of Oregon. There also will be video highlights and raffle contests. Admission is $9 and includes gratuity. Civil War luncheons will also be held in Klamath Falls and Bend on Tuesday and Roseburg on Wednesday. For information, call Don Pinkham at 773-2214. OSU adds seats for game against Oregon CORVALLIS -- Oregon State has added approximately 1,000 bleacher seats to Parker Stadium for the Civil War football game against Oregon Nov. 21. The Beavers' athletic ticket director, Joe Sharpe, also has indicated a limited number of reserve seats, priced at $28 apiece, will go on sale Monday at 8:30 a.m. at OSU's athletic ticket office. Tickets can also be purchased over the phone by calling 541-737-4455 or 1-800-GO BEAVS. Kickoff is set for 3:37 p.m. and will be televised live by Fox Sports Network. Whitehead bowls 297 game in Riverside Terry Whitehead of White City rolled 11 straight strikes en route to a 297 game Tuesday night in the Riverside League at Medford Lanes. Whitehead had a 631 series. Roberts bowls top game for senior men Neal Roberts of Central Point shot the high game of the 1998-99 season for senior men bowlers with a 287 game during Wednesday afternoon's Seniors Mixed Pairs League at Medford Lanes.
