This past week we noticed many robins in the area, a dozen or two dozen in several trees. Do these birds migrate? -- Efton and Veda L. Yes, and there's more to it than that. The American robin is common around Jackson County every month of the year. But that's not the same as saying robins don't migrate. They do. Many of the robins you saw last summer are wintering in California or as far south as Central America. And many of the ones you're seeing now are wintering here and will return to Canada in the spring. The other issue (in addition to migration) is roosting. Now that they're not nesting anymore (that was spring and summer, right?), they often roost communally. Sometimes the results can be truly spectacular. A team of birders in the local edition of this year's Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 17 near Gold Ray Dam witnessed a morning flyout of robins so immense it blackened (and reddened) the sky as they flew down the river from their roosts for 45 minutes.
