Allred fails to qualify for U.S. Amateur Former Ashland star takes 7th on second day of Texas event DESOTO, Texas - Jason Allred of Ashland missed out in his bid to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship Tuesday, shooting 152 for 36 holes at Thorntree Country Club. Allred shot rounds of 76 in the morning and afternoon, 4 over par on each tour of the 7,023-yard course. His 152 total put him seventh among the 72 players attempting to qualify Tuesday. The top three players from Monday and Tuesday advanced to the championship Aug. 20-26 in Atlanta. A pair of Texans - Shane Evangelist of Irving and Adam Meyer of Waco - tied for the top qualifying spot with a 1-under par 143 on Monday. Justin Bates of Allen, Texas, grabbed the third spot in a three-person playoff of golfers tied at 144. Final results from Tuesday's qualifying round were unavailable as of press time. There were 160 entrants spread out over two days of qualifying at Thorntree, each playing two rounds in one day. It was the second straight year Allred has failed to qualify for the U.S. Amateur. He has also played in it twice, automatically making the field when he won the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in 1997 and through qualifying two years later. In '97, Allred advanced through two medal rounds and to the final 16 in match play before narrowly being eliminated. In '99, he didn't advance past the medal rounds. Allred, an academic All-American selection this year and a three-time all-West Coast Conference player, will be a senior at Pepperdine this year. Allred, who will play in another prestigious tournament beginning today in Michigan, hadn't initially planned to try to qualify for the amateur until next week. But the site he chose had a full field, and he was bumped to DeSoto. He eschewed qualifying tournaments closer to home in Portland July 23 and Woodburn July 25 because he didn't think he'd have time to round his game into form following a three-week rafting trip with his family. Allred was to begin play this afternoon in the 99th Western Amateur at Point O'Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich. The Michigan tournament is regarded as perhaps the best amateur tournament in the United States, outside the U.S. Amateur.
