Single dad of 6 could use some support By Buffy Pollock Dec 22, 2022 12:15 AM A A Editor’s note: Light One Candle is an annual series sponsored by the Mail Tribune that focuses on an individual, group or organization who could use a helping hand during the holiday season. Once that need is filled, donations may be distributed to others in need. A single dad who gives his all to provide for his children in their small, modest home does the best he can. Although the father is able to provide shelter, sleeping arrangements and food, there’s not much left for anything else. Caseworkers from CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) nominated the family this year to make their Christmas a little brighter. The mother is not involved — and is the reason the kids came into care. Caseworkers say they’re impressed by the hardworking dad, as in most cases, large sibling groups must be split into different foster homes when fathers aren’t a viable option. CASA volunteers are assigned to children who have experienced abuse or neglect to ensure their needs are met and they have a voice in court. In Jackson County, there are over 180 local volunteer CASAs who work with over 500 children’s cases annually, and 150 children are waiting for CASAs. Jennifer Mylenek, executive director, said the dad and his children are extremely bonded and simply “grateful to be together.” Said Mylenek, “Dad greets the CASA with open arms and is grateful to have the CASA’s support.” For the holidays this year, some much-appreciated items would include clothes, help with food and some toys to play with. The boys’ ages are 9, 7, 6 and 5; and the girls’ ages are 5 and 4. The kids are energetic, almost all school age and have a small yard to play in. Gift cards are welcome for help with grocery items and for the dad to pick out a few things to make the holidays brighter. All six kids could use warm winter clothes. All four boys have asked Santa for radio/remote control cars. The three older boys wish for tablets. The two little girls love the cartoon “Peppa Pig” and baby dolls (black baby dolls preferred).
