I have not heard if that trail was actually completed by the end of September 2014. —Louis J., Phoenix Well Louis, the trail was in fact completed as scheduled, thanks to the efforts of the Siskiyou Mountain Club and a work crew from The Job Council. For those who don't know, the trail to Pilot Rock was reworked last summer through a $50,000 grant from the federal Bureau of Land Management. Hikers making their way to the top of the peak, which offers views of both the southern Rogue Valley and Mount Shasta, have long relied on a user-created trail that split off from the Pacific Crest Trail near its intersection with an old logging road. The new trail, which overlaps the original route in several locations, features a series of switchbacks armored with natural stone that ease the climb to the base. Adventurous types hoping to make their way to the top should be aware that the final ascent to the top of Pilot Rock still requires a steep scramble up a narrow rock chute. —Send questions to “Since You Asked,” Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
