Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 14, 2005 Roseburg surges back to defeat Panthers Prep Volleyball ROSEBURG — South Medford had Roseburg on the ropes in a Southern Oregon Conference volleyball match Tuesday night. But the two-time defending SOC champion Indians came back swinging to claim a 27-25, 16-25, 25-14, 25-18 victory. The Panthers (3-3, 1-1 SOC) held a 16-8 advantage in the first game, only to watch as Roseburg regrouped to take the opener. "We really blew it in the first game," said South Medford coach Adam Wagman. "We let them back into it and let them take it from us." South managed to dust itself off to take Game 2 behind a consistent defense and strong serve receive. "I was proud of the girls for the adjustment they made and the way they bounced back from the loss," Wagman said. Advertisement The Indians (1-1 SOC), however, put the Panthers on their heels for the remainder of the match with a mighty defensive effort of their own. "Roseburg just played great defense in Games 3 and 4," Wagman said. "They kept making play after play and eventually we’d break down and make an error that’d give them the point." Chenoa Coviare led South Medford with 13 kills, while Tori Glover had four blocks and Simone Hubbard a team-high 29 assists. Four different Panthers were in double digits in digs to lead the team. Despite the Roseburg victory, Wagman was pleased overall with his team’s strides. "It’s a better showing than we’ve made in the past here," said the coach. "It shows we’ve made some progress. But it also shows that when you play the two-time defending champion you have to play better for longer stretches if you want to win." NORTH MEDFORD 3, EAGLE POINT 1 — Junior Lauren Berger’s performance in the middle helped North Medford to a 25-15, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22 home victory. The teams split the first two games. In the third, Eagle Point led 16-14 when Whitney Hodnett had two aces during a five-point serving run to turn the momemtum for the Black Tornado (5-1, 2-0 SOC). Berger finished with a team-high 17 kills, with only two attacking errors. Berger also had four aces and four blocks. Sophomore outside Hodnett added 14 kills and 11 digs. The Black Tornado defense was sparked by Becca Treger (14 digs) and Kellie Satterfield (8 digs). ASHLAND 3, GRANTS PASS 0 — At Ashland, Ashland swept Grants Pass 25-10, 25-11, 25-14, behind another strong performance from senior Jessica Walters. Walters, the Grizzlies’ dominating outside hitter, finished with 11 digs and seven kills. Sarah Holgen contributed eight digs and six kills, while Maddison Thivierge (15 kills) and Lindsey Stone (13 assists) also performed well for Ashland (5- 0). CRATER 3, KLAMATH UNION 1 — At Central Point, after dropping the first set, Crater rebounded with stronger serving and better passing to claim a 19-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-19 SOC victory. Randi Salyer racked up 48 assists and Kirstin Davidson had a team-high 18 kills to lead the Comets. Haley Hevern tallied 11 digs and nine kills for Crater (1-1 SOC). Klamath Union fell to 0-2 in conference. Skyline Conference MAZAMA 3, PHOENIX 0 — At Phoenix, Mazama controlled all aspects of the Skyline Conference opener en route to a 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 victory. Phoenix (5-2, 0-1 Skyline) shot itself in the foot by posting a sub-par 85 percent success rate from the service line. Sophomore outside hitter Katie Fidler led the Pirates with eight kills and served 8-for-8 with two kills. Senior middle Kelsey Nelson added six kills. HENLEY 3, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Henley, the Hornets defeated the Knights in dominating fashion, sweeping North Valley 25-13, 25-9, 25-13 in the Skyline match. Henley (4-0, 1-0 Skyline) middle blockers Megan Christensen and Jennifer Island finished with 10 and 13 kills, respectively. Henley was able to control the match with strong passing led by setter Sierra Patzke (27 assists). ILLINOIS VALLEY 3, ROGUE RIVER 1 — At Rogue River, Illinois Valley defeated Rogue River 25-22, 26-28, 26-24, 25-17, in Skyline action. IV senior Emily Dudley showed tremendous all-around skills, chipping in 13 kills, 10 aces and 32 assists. Erica Riley finished with 19 kills and 12 aces, while Leilani Tausaga had 13 kills for the Cougars (1-0). Jessica Miller provided nine aces and 12 digs and Armanda Falleur had 10 digs for Rogue River (0-3). Nonconference ST. MARY’S 3, BUTTE FALLS 1 — At Butte Falls, Sara Godshall recorded a career-high six blocks for St. Mary’s as the Crusaders registered a 25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19 nonconference win. The Crusaders’ Cynthia Naumes splashed down five of her seven aces in the fourth set and went 26-for-26 from the service line. Naumes also had 18 assists during the match. Kelsey Reedy tallied 22 digs and 10 kills for St. Mary’s, while Kindi Sutfin led Butte Falls (2-2 Big Fur) with eight kills and four aces.
