Snowshoeing Crater Lake when Rim Village is closed By David Smigelski Mail Tribune Jan 25, 2016 12:00 AM A A The road to Rim Village in Crater Lake National Park has been closed frequently this winter because of heavy snow. On many days visitors can drive only as far as the Steele Visitor Center, about 3.5 miles short of Rim Village and Crater Lake. Many snowshoers and skiers don't let that stop them, however, strapping on their footwear and tromping to the rim through the snowy woods. To check on road conditions before heading to the park, call 541-594-3100 or see the park website at http://www.nps.gov/crla/index.htm Nancy McClain of Medford snowshoes up a mountainside in Crater Lake National Park Saturday. The road from Steele Visitor Center to Rim Village was closed due to heavy snow, requiring visitors to ski or hike a few miles to the rim if they wanted to see it. - Photo by David Smigelski
