Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 7, 2006 Smith, Decuir shine as Pirates rout Illinois Valley Boys Basketball CAVE JUNCTION — Phoenix came into a Skyline Conference boys basketball game at Illinois Valley with a chip on its shoulder Friday. After getting blown out with a sub-par performance Tuesday against second-ranked Hidden Valley, the Pirates had something to prove. Phoenix took care of business with a 62-37 win over the Cougars. The victory evened the Pirates’ Skyline record at 1-1 and and improved their overall mark to 7-5. "Phoenix came out and defended well," said Illinois Valley coach Mike Durrant. "It’s not a good matchup for us. We can’t match up with their quickness." Senior point guard Dustin Smith proved to be a thorn in IV’s side. Smith scored 16 points, but more importantly, he orchestrated the Pirates’ offense. Advertisement "(Smith) was the big difference-maker," said Durrant. "He did a lot of penetrating and got other players involved." Phoenix 6-foot-4 senior post Ben DeCuir exploded for a game-high 22 points. DeCuir scored 11 of the Pirates’ 21 points in the second quarter. The game was tied at 2-all with three minutes left in the opening quarter, then Phoenix went on a 28-17 run the rest of the half. For Illinois Valley (4-9, 0-2 Skyline), Sam McMahon had a team-high 10 points. "We played hard, but didn’t have the horses to compete against them tonight," said Durrant. HENLEY 69, NORTH VALLEY 56 — At Klamath Falls, sophomore post Winston Mueller went for 24 points and eight rebounds as Henley came on strong in the second half. North Valley held a 35-31 lead at the break, but the Hornets outscored the Knights 38-21 in the second half. Henley (7-6, 2-0 Skyline) hit the boards hard in the second half, grabbing 20 of its 31 rebounds. James Nygren had 12 points and pulled down all nine of his rebounds after the intermission. Hornets point guard Colin Stock added 16 points and dished out six assists. For North Valley (9-5, 0-1 Skyline), Derekk Vandehey tallied a team-best 19 points and Josh Makepeace tossed in 15. Rogue River (3-14, 0-2 Skyline) trailed 33-20 at halftime, but rallied in the second half and cut the Vikings’ margin to two points with just under three minutes to go. Skyline A League BUTTE FALLS 48, PAISLEY 43 — At Paisley, Chris Stephenson made a lay-up off a steal with 52 seconds remaining to help Butte Falls seal the Skyline A victory. With the Loggers up 44-43, Stephenson thwarted a possible go-ahead basket by Paisley as he stepped into a passing lane and quickly took the ball to the other end for the basket that increased Butte Falls’ lead to three. The Loggers’ Dillon Ross scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds with Stephenson adding four steals and 17 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field.. Butte Falls moved to 1-0 in the Skyline A League and 5-8 overall with the win. Matt St. Louis led Paisley (0-1 Sky-A) with 14 points. PROSPECT 64, TRIAD 41 — At Prospect, Jacob Schultz had a game-high 19 points and nine assists to propel Prospect to a win in its Skyline A Conference opener. Darryl Swearingen’s defense on Triad’s leading scorer Derik Trumball set the tone for the Cougars as they maintained their defensive intensity throughout the contest and kept Triad from getting anything going offensively. Ricky Miller poured in a season-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, Dakota Gordon added 11 points and Colin Matson scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Prospect. Swearingen added seven points and 10 rebounds and the 5-foot-7 Schultz had three blocks for Prospect (6-5, 1-0 Skyline A).
